Old Modernians Football Club - Clive Smythe GTK

Club Chairman - Mr Clive Smythe

1. Name - Clive Alexander Smythe

2. AKA -
Smythey, The Leader, Greatest Living Mod

3. Age -
48 Earth years, 234 Silorian Moons

4. Position -
Centre forward - All time leading Mods goal scorer. 1001 career goals.

5. Boots -
Best boots ever - Puma SPA Kings - one now in a glass case at the FA museum, the other at NASA for research into how they bent the rules of Physics

6. Playing History -
Played for Mods on Saturdays from 1982 - 2004. One year out at Trinity and All Saints (1987) won league and cup double there. Mods nearly relegated. Scored 64 goals that season. You asked not me.
Played for same Sunday team from 1980 - 1997 under a variety of names ranging from Pubs to Banks to furniture suppliers.

7. Best players to have played alongside -
Gerry Reynolds, head and shoulders above the rest. Kevin Horigan, Norton Howden.

8. Best players to have played against -
Don't know the name of the player who destroyed us at Elland years ago. Big blond lad who had just been released from Huddersfield Town. Picked up ball on his own D played a one-two on the half way line and crashed the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area. We all almost applauded. He had the heart of a horse and the head of an armadillo. The feet of a gibbon and the socks of a gentleman.

9. Football Idol -
would have to be Bryan Robson. Win a match single handedly in the afternoon, start a fight in the pub toilets in the evening. Wander around covered in urine looking for a taxi in the morning. A fantastic role model.

10. Best Supporting Memory -
Watching Leeds against Nottingham Forest at Elland Rd in an FA cup game in the 70's. The Kop was ridiculously over full and scarily dangerous. When we began the song 'We hate Nottingham Forest...' and everyone joined in (even the coppers) it set the hairs on the back of my head on end which was quite a feat in itself as I had long hair down my back in those days.

11. Worst Supporting Memory -
Going to Elland Rd on my own in the late 70's to watch Leeds V Wolves in a 0-0 draw. I couldn't envisage ever going to that place again and took up playing sport on a Saturday instead thank God.

12. Greatest Mods Moment -
receiving the Yorkshire Shield and holding it up in front of our team and supporters at Pocklington. I didn't have a great game but made up for it that night by passing out early on as a result of one million pints of beer and at least 40 maximum strength pain killers that I'd taken before, during and after the game.

13. Worst Mods Moment -
again a personal note. Playing at Bramley a couple of years ago in absolute agony as I put my boots on in the changing room before the game and knowing that the game was up but hoping that sheer bottle and heart would get me to half time. It didn't and I was justifiably slated by a horrible ginner on our team called Jamie who I've since seen playing rugby so that kind of evens that score up.

14. Mods Hero -
Lots of Mods heroes, probably too many to mention and do justice to individually. I once made an idiot of myself at a Mods dinner and insulted Geoff Smith who presented me with an award. I found out gradually later on that Geoff had been instrumental in securing the land for our ground and that he was the driving force behind us being a proper club instead of a bunch of park players. He was also a war hero having been awarded the DFC. I've never really lived my disappointment in myself down on that score. So, Geoff Smith.

15. Best Ground Played At -
I played for the League team at Hendon in London which was very good. At university we played at some fantastic grounds. Newcastle was awesome. I've played at league grounds over the years but we all looked forward to playing at Yorkshire Bank and Leeds Permanent grounds that have since fallen to the developer.

16. Favourite Artist -
My favourite artist and track changes with the wind. Currently I like The Killers - All these things that I have done.

17. Pre Match Preperation -
When I played, I used to make sure I had a good breakfast and that my boots were clean and my towel didn't smell too much of death. I used to like to walk the pitch (most of the time impossible when the club pitch was a swamp). Mostly I just liked linking up with the lads to get the crack going and have a laugh. There was always some poor scapegoat. I always liked the same spot in the changing rooms - far corner left hand side. I could see who was behind me at all times - an important advantage in that team.

18. What do you do on a Saturday when not playing football -
I go cycling or look after my kids on a Saturday. During the season I go to the club to watch a game there. I do get frustrated watching but have to accept that. It's great now that we've got a bunch of lads that seem to give a f*ck about winning and losing. It means a lot to me.

19. Best friend at the Club -
Too many to mention. Obviously the lads I played with but I've been greatly encouraged by the quality of the lads we've got at the club now.

20. 1 Thing you would Change about the Club -
More working class, alabaster legged, rough edged, heart of gold, will of steel WINNERS. We play against lads like this week in week out who haven't got one tenth of our skill and style but regularly bury us because they are no nonsense guys with an answer when the fight goes to the floor. It'll come with our lot as we get more experienced and the recession continues.
