Match Report

Match Report - 24 Sep 2011, Old Modernians Football Club Reserves lost to Hessle United (Shield Round 1)

The Mods returned from Hull with their heads held high after 120 minutes of hard-fought cup football. Each and every player was proud to play for their club, and the club should be proud of them. All showed the determination and desire that has seen the upturn in club fortunes gather pace over the last 18 months. Even with just 11 players making the trip to Hull, and after 70 minutes injuries began to appear without the option of respite, all 11 Mods did their jobs without complaint or angry word to a team-mate.

The game itself was not a spectacle, with both defences on top for the majority. Ben Bowman showed the potential match-winning player he can be by firing home from 20 yards after a defensive error to give Mods the lead. Injury then hindered his ability to further influence the game but he played another hour nontheless. Hessle then equalized after a period of pressure to go in 1-1 at half time. The second-half and injury time passed without another clear-cut chance other than that of James Douglas who, despite terrorizing the Hessle defence for the last 10 minutes, could not find the back of the net.

Mods lost on penalties eventually, but felt that Saturday 24th September may well be remembered in May as the day the team spirit got cranked up a level to really kick-start the season.
