Match Report - 15 Oct 2011, Old Modernians Football Club Reserves beat Westbrook YMCA (Senior Cup Round 2)
Mods had to surrender home advantage for this 2nd round Leeds Senior Cup tie, making the short trip up to Tinshill Top to face local side Wesbrook YMCA of the West Riding County Amateur League.
Mods started brightly, with only two changes from the previous game helping the continuity (March in for Wilkinson and Wilson in for Lewis). The Tinshill pitch was showing a dislike for anyone who wanted a good first touch, throwing the ball up to knee height when expected to continue rolling serenely along. However, Mods took the lead midway through the first half when a diagonal through ball by Bergan was spilled by the Wesbrook 'keeper and Adie Shaduwa was on hand to tap the ball into the empty net. Mods at this point had been the better side for 30 minutes and looked like extending their lead further.
This was not to be as, once again, Mods contributed to their own probems when 3 Mods players failed to clear a ball in their own six yard box. The Westbrook player duly dispatched the ball into Matty Lewis's net at first asking. This galvanised Westbrook who saw a slice of good fortune as their way back into the tie. Westbrook had the upper hand through to half time, without threatening the Mods goal directly.
The second half saw chances predominantly fall the way of Westbrook who will feel they should have put away at leat one of the four 1v1's, but with Richard March and Matty Lewis performing heroics to keep them out, it was not to be. In the second half Tommy Stenger replaced Ryan Leadbeater for his 2nd team debut and was excellent. Danny Clemence replaced Adam Matthews and added experience and coposure to the (left) midfield and right-back positions at various points in the game.
The 2nd half drew to a close and Extra Time saw Westbrook score from a corner as their Centre Half powered a header home. The Mods defence were static and failed to react, the Wesbrook player did not. Time was ticking away for Mods, 3 minutes left, when Danny Clemence delivered a fine ball into the box which was met by a fine header from Ryan Unsworth. Top corner 2-2. Penalties? No Chance. Rich Ewen drove a ball over the Wesbrook defence and Ryan Unsworth slammed the ball in at the near post. 3-2.
Great determination to keep believing until the end. Westbrook will feel like they threw it away, but then they shouldn't have sat back when 2-1 up.
