Match Report - 01 Oct 2011, Old Modernians Football Club Reserves lost to Leeds Medics Reserves
Mods lost the day's early kick-off after losing their way in the game following an impressive start.
The Mods started the game relatively brightly, defending well and using the ball purposefully when going forward. This positive start was rewrded when James Douglas capitalised on a defensive error to give Mods the lead. Mods kept playing well for a further tem minutes until the half-hour mark when Medics seemed to wake up. After a period of 10-minutes pressure a set piece resulted in the ball being turned in. Medics deserved their equaliser despite stand-in keeper Sam Lawson keeping them out superbly with some excellent saves.
The second half was, unfortunately for The Mods, mostly dominated by Medics. Their tidy midfielders kept the ball and spread it to wide areas, often with little opposition from The Mods players. Up front Medics were sharp and the Mods defence seemed likely to make the error that would give away the points. This duly came after an all-too-easy passage of play lead to a cross that was finished from close range. There was nothing that Lawson could do about the goal, he was bravely enduring the last 30 minutes of the game after a painful collision left his knee badly bruised.
Mods upped the tempo to try and find an equaliser in the last 10 minutes but offered no real threat to the Medics goal.
In the end Mods will, and should, feel frustrated about their performance as this was a winnable game. Medics will have enjoyed the game, and the win, as they were allowed to play their passing game with few strong, aggressive challenges.
