Match Report - 08 Oct 2011, Old Modernians Football Club 5ths lost to East Ardsley Wanderers Reserves

Old ModerniansV 2 East Ardsley Wanderer's Res 3 (HT 0-2)
Mod Scorer's Andy Morris 50mins, Neil Bennington 65mins.

For all those that keep an eye out for upcoming entertainment delights and events, then the new Lars Von Trier film, Melancholia, will have caught your attention.
The synopsis is loosely based around that old chestnut of the end of the world. This time the end comes via Earth in a head on collision with another planet, 'Melancholia'.

ModsV had their own end of the world moment with thirty seconds to go of the return match against East Ardsley Wanderer's.
0-2 down at half-time, ModsV rallied, and with the knowledge that we could easily have got a couple of goals ourselves (a couple of glorious opportunities snatched), we were convinced the next goal would be a ModsV goal.

A bright start, and after constant pressure, Andy Morris supplied the goal on 50minutes, with a well driven strike into the bottom left hand corner from the left hand egde of the East Ardsley penalty area.

Confidence high, ModsV continued to apply pressure, with the defence resolute and disciplined, the midfield dominating possesion and in attack Oli and Tank pressed the East Ardsley defence into retreat.
On 65 minutes, I scored, cutting in from the right wing and clipped a shot from 25 yards over the back peddling East Ardsley keeper into the top corner.
2-2 and at that moment in the game, the momentum, possesion and chances all in ModsV favour.

Pete Harris then had a great chance, from good work by Tank and Oliver Lines, only for the ball to be inches from the end of Pete's foot as he stretched out his leg on the goal line.

East Ardsley rallied and the last 20 minutes of the game turned into a battle royale with both teams showing great commitment, determination and passion to seek out the goal that would win the game.

The momentum began to swing in East Ardsley's favour.

The ref signalled 1 minute left. A long ball forward by East Ardsley was not dealt effectively by ModsV on the edge of the penalty area, a scramble (30 seconds left) and with 19 bodies for the ball to land at the feet of, the ball fell to the East Ardsley striker 16 yards out and his well driven strike hit the back of the ModsV net.

Boom...the planet Melancholia smashed into ModsV.

East Ardsley's celebrations at the end of the game told it's own story.

But for a lack of discipline on two occasions in defence (from all areas of the team) and 2 significant opportunities in front of goal wasted, ModsV once again put in a performance of real grit, concentration, determination and passion.

A massive blow at the end of the game, but the way ModsV fought back from 2 goals down, against a team that have re grouped after last season's shock relegation, will give the team a big boost.

Hard to take this defeat, however, the performance (especially in the 2nd half), will, 9 times out of 10, win games in this division.

Each player deserves a mention for their efforts, but one player from start to finish exhibited moments of real skill and class and that is Andy Morris.
Andy dominated midfield and scored, again, a great goal. Well played Andy.

Song for the Day

Another game is over
And we're left cold sober
I don't wanna talk about it
Want to forget about it
Wanna be intoxicated with that OldMods brew

So, Melancholia
You know you wanna
Send the team on an all time low
No no no
Now Don't expect us
To behave perfectly
And wear that sunny smile
My guess is we're in for a cloudy and overcast

The ball came into our enclosure
we lost all composure
now we're permanently glued
to this extraordinary mood
Called the Old Modernian Blues
