Match Report - 17 Dec 2011, Old Modernians Football Club Reserves beat St. Nicholas

Mods entered the Christmas break with a result they needed after two difficult away fixtures in the last two weeks.

St Nicks were late arriving, 2:35, and 2 of the Mods players had decided to egg-chase on the adjacent pitch after assuming the game was off. For the record, there is no ill-feeling toward St Nicks as I believe it was a genuine oversight and on the Full-Time website it does indeed state bedquilts#3 as the venue for some reason.

The game started at a high tempo as the ref had adjusted the game to 35 minutes each way. Mods soon opened the scoring with Ryan Leadbeater driving a low shot under the keeper. Mods were on top in most areas of the pitch, but conceded an equiliser after 3 Mods defenders allowed the St Nicks striker to turn and shoot unopposed. Matty Lewis will have nightmares about the ball slipping though his fingers and into the net.

Jonny Wilson then doubled his goals tally for the season after an exquisite through ball from centre-back Ben Mallinson. Wilson cooly rounded the keeper and finished calmly, resisting the urge to try and break the net must have taken all Jonny's powers of self-control. St Nicks then went a man down after their centre midfielder was sent off for 2 bookable offences that were his only offences to that point, but the ref got it right as they were both definite yellows.

Mods then seized control of the game and in the second half played some excellent football, taking advantage of the extra man and switching play well. Jonny Wilson then decided to have his own goal of the season competition, bagging 1 from 50 yds and another from 35. To counter these two strikes, Si Lewis and Ben Mallinson scored two goals that won't live long in the memory and won't be given any description here, they were that bad.

Wilson bagged 2 more to make it 5 for the game and finish the scoring at 8-1.

Credit too to Toddy who has settled in very well and had a great game on the left of midfield, with Adam Matthews matching Toddys performance on the right. JP Craig pulled the strings from the centre of the park and Keeney and Stenger exemplified the strength in depth at the club by stepping up for the 3rds and playing very well.

Merry Christmas all.
