Match Report - 28 Jan 2012, Old Modernians Football Club 5ths lost to Huddersfield Amateur IV
By Ollie Lines
A late fight back from Mods was not enough to stop Huddersfield Amateurs going home with a 4-2 victory. Huddersfield were cruising at 4-0 after an hour, but a spirited Mods came back and nearly managed to scrape a point.
The match as a whole was considerably better than last week’s, despite the result. We had a referee who knew what he was doing, weather that wasn’t blowing us all over the shop, and subsequently a more flowing game and better standard of football.
The match opened with some good football by both teams, but neither could muster a decent chance. There were some half-chances, but the 2 keepers held firm to keep the score at 0-0.
Huddersfield had the first real chance when the ball made its way through to a striker, but Dave was alert to the danger and smothered the attacker’s shot. Mods soon created a chance of their own when a throw-in was laid-off to me (Ollie) by Tim, and my volley went just over the bar from 25 yards.
Matty was working like a Trojan on the wing, helping Benno out at right back and surging forward whenever he got the chance. He supplied some decent crosses, but we just couldn’t get our heads to them.
Andy and John were playing excellent in midfield, winning nearly everything. Andy had a couple of long shots, one a free kick, but they went just wide. Huddersfield were also creating chances, and the first goal came after about 35 minutes when a corner came across and the attacker’s header was placed perfectly between Dave and Harry on the post to sneak in. 1-0 Huddersfield.
Mods had a couple of half-chances, but the half-time whistle came with Amateurs still in front 1-0
HT: Old Mods V 0-1 Huddersfield Amateurs IV
Mods were looking to start the 2nd half as they ended the first, but Huddersfield doubled their advantage inside 5 minutes, and soon progressed to make it 3-0 a few minutes later. Mods were still in shock after having conceded 2 goals within a matter of minutes, and we were getting ourselves back into the game when the killer blow struck – a powerful header that flew past Dave and in to the roof of the net.
We resisted a couple more of their attacks and started to rebuild, and soon started creating chances of our own. I then made way for Tank after an hour, and Andy was taken off for George a few minutes later.
Johnnie (again!) managed to get one back for Mods after firing home from close range. This was soon followed with another goal when a free kick hit the wall and Matty was first to react, prodding the ball home from 6 yards. We suddenly had a renewed hope and if anyone was going to score next, it was us. Huddersfield brought on a nippy, young winger, who was giving Benno all sorts of problems at right back. But we still had the momentum and almost halved the deficit when George carried the ball forward and unleashed a thunderbolt which flew narrowly wide of the top corner.
That ultimately proved to be our last real chance as the game petered out with the score still at 4-2.

Man of the Match was Matty, and deservedly so. He worked hard for 90 minutes on the right wing and provided the goal which could have led to us to snatch a draw.
