Match Report - 13 Apr 2011, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds beat Grangefield OB

This was by far the biggest game of the season so far, league leaders Grangefield were coming to Cookridge looking to extend their lead at the top after a fantastic unbeaten run, the Mods wanting to move into second place and put pressure on any title hopefuls. Because of Grangefield's fine unbeaten run they arrived at Mods full of confidence, like a bunch of American volleyball players, giving each other high 5's in the car park and making Rick Flair like noises to disturb the tranquil surroundings.

Mods had to reshuffle their line up as the first team needed to make a couple of late call ups so Joe Fraser stepped in at centre half to partner David Bergen, the youngest central midfield partnership in the league was reunited as Josh "Mad dog" Williams lined up alongside Ryan Leadbeater and the most potent strikeforce in the league continued up top as Simon Lewis and Jake Williams looked to extend their impressive tally.

As you would expect both teams started brightly with the ball moving quickly and accurately on a carpet like surface, as it settled down Grangefield edged posession but Mods looked dangerous on the counter and from set pieces. Joe Fraser looked like he'd played for the Reserves all year as he and Bergen kept a tight line, restricting Grangefield to a couple of Marco Van Basten like efforts which never troubled Stew. The only effort of note which did fall Grangefield's was was a looping header from a free kick which Stew did will to palm around the post. Jake and Si looked dangerous for the Mods without getting the service that might unlock the Grangefield defence, until Andy Atkins set Jake racing clear on 30 mins but his vicious volley was fired straight at the GK.

It looked as though half time might end goalless then with 45 mins on the clock Mods won a corner on their right side. Adie Shaduwa didn't strike the ball as cleanly as he may of liked, but Si ran across his man to the near post, flicking the ball to the unmarked Jake who doesn't miss from inside 5 yards (except for that time at East Ardsley when he hit the bar from 1 yard). (HT 1-0)

Grangefield started the second half well, pinning the Mods in their own half without really getting behind the back four. The way the whole of the team defended it did look like Grangefield would have to do something special to equalise and they got their little bit of magic on 52 mins. The Kwik Tan right back picked up a clearance 35 yards out and without looking up or thinking smashed the ball into the Mods top corner, it actually hit the stantion then came back down and bounced up off the cross bar, eventually rolling along the goal line to confuse Stew who didn't know if it had gone in or not.

After this spectators may have thought that Grangefield would run away with proceedings but it was Mods who responded and looked to take all 3 points. Adie Shaduwa got into the game with some good runs down the right whilst Ryan and Josh put on an exhibition in the art of winning the ball in the centre of the park. On 70 mins the ref made a big call, awarding the Mods a penalty as Si Lewis was tripped in the box. As Si had received treatment he had to leave the field of play and was unable to take the spot kick, up stepped the self proclaimed ginger one shoe'd tramp, Andy Atkins, to fire the pen into the top corner.

Atkins was replace by James Douglas soon after as his air conditioned boot finally gave up the ghost. The game was end to end by now but the Mods still looked solid at the back. Flash was introduced on 85 mins to support the midfield as Si Lewis made way and the cultured maestro won his tackles and calmed play down when he got posession.

As gloom descended over Cookridge and the game entered the 95th minute Grangefield mounted one last attack, the right midfielder got behind the back line and pulled the ball back to the pen spot, an on-rushing midfielder shouted "let it go" repeatedly which the Mods defence duly did as the midfielder slotted the ball into the bottom corner. Fortunately for Mods the ref's whistle had already gone and a free kick was awarded as the ref explained that shouting "let it go" in that situation is not allowed. The final whistle went straight after and the ref was surrounded by Grangefield spectators but to no avail from their point of view.

Mods claim all 3 points and move to within 4 of top spot.
