Match Report - 08 Sep 2012, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds beat Sandal Athletic
Mods finally ended their Sandal hoodoo in emphatic fashion.
Mods started brightly and it wasn't long before Jake Williams smashed a free-kick into the top corner, despite it clearly being a better angle for the left footer, Sproats, to have a dig.
Sandal almost equalized straight from the kick-off with a rasping drive that Matty managed to watch all the way (unlike the goal at Collingham last year). That effort, and one drifting effort that hit the bar were the best that Sandal could create in the first half, with Mods bagging goals through Unsworth, Leadbeater, and Williams with another 2.
Sandal clearly knew their only way back into the game was to come out after the break and get a couple of early goals, and they did this through an expertly dispatched free-kick on 50'. However, Mods quickley restored their 5-goal advantage through Unsworth, who completed his hat-trick during the 2nd half, and 2 from Alex Monkhouse.
The forward line will, deservedly, get the plaudits from the game but all over the field the players in red and black showed quality, grit and determination. The back four of Bradford, Bergan, Sproats and Mellor were well organised and competed well with their big centre-forward. The midfield of Gilligan, Leadbeater, Smith and Thorpe showed quality in possession and strength in the tackle to deny the Sandal players time on the ball. Finally, off the bench Kerr and Monkhouse gave the squad fresh legs and we were able to replace quality with quality when needed.
A great performance all-round, bring on Wigton Moor!!
