Match Report - 24 Nov 2012, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds beat Beeston Old Boys
Mods' Movember representitive, Josh Smith, reports this week's win v Beeston:
Saturday 24th November Beeston Old Boys “welcomed” Mods to Cardinal Square. Beeston lined up with Blazin’ Squad at the back, Not So Solid Crew in the midfield and a couple of lads that have had refused entry on the Jeremy Kyle show up front. Mods started with Matthew Lewis, Ben Bowman back in a right back and Damien Mellor at left back. Daniel Bradford and David Bergan in the middle of the defence. Andy Atkins and Stef Papa rotating on each flank. Brendan Gilligan and Josh Smith in the centre of midfield. Up top Johnny Hick and Ryan Unsworth. The bench, as strong as always was occupied by Simon Oliver, Phillip Gillet and Daniel Jamieson.
Knowing that Beeston would be up for this one, and not having the best start we knew they wanted to kick start their season. Mods having conceded six goals in their last game knew we had to buckle up, “its not acceptable to concede six goals at this level”.
Warm up finished, both teams found it evident that the ball would undoubtedly stick to this pitch, long grass and plenty of mud was going to make it difficult for both teams.
Chances in the first half were few and far between. Some good work from Hick and Papa putting Unsworth through on goal, only for the ball to take a bobble at the last second. Surely the poor upkeep of the pitch was to blame for this one. Minutes later Unsworth found himself in a similar position, Beeston on the back foot after some persistent pressure surely this would be the reward Mods had been working for? No, another bad bobble for Unsworth having done all the hard work and rounding the keeper, unable to finish.
Mods looking strong at the back, Mellor and Bowman clearing their lines with distinction and Bergan and Bradford not giving the Beeston forwards and time to turn, all looked well. All we needed was a goal.
Half time came quickly, and having most of the possession and some good chances Mods felt a blank score line didn’t do us justice. We had to score first!
The game started to open up in the second half with both sides wanting to take the lead, chances started to be created and more and more space being exposed. Who was going to make the most of this? Survival of the fittest, Mods having a fixture postponed the previous week were feeling the fresher after the interval. Good work by Gilligan and Smith in the midfield snubbing out Beeston’s offence. Atkins and Papa starting to cause the Beeston defence problems, drawing free kicks and settling for corners Mods looking the team most likely to score.
Beeston having a shot or an attempt on goal in the second half was as likely as seeing
Gesture of good will from their right back. Having said that though, it appeared Beeston had scored an unlikely goal only for the referee to fittingly disallow, offside. Mods lucky. With all this space being created mods knew we had to take advantage of it. Some good work by Papa, Atkins, Unsworth and Hick creating chances getting closer. Who was it going to be, Andy Atkins right place at the right time, “you can’t teach that” nodding past the keeper.
Most looked solid throughout, rigid at the back, determined in midfield and flamboyant upfront. Some tired legs? Maybe, time for some changes, David Bergan replaced by Simon Oliver, Ben Bowman by Daniel Jamieson and Andrew Atkins by Phillip Gillett.
Some good work again down the left flank by Papa resulting in an increasingly frustrated Beeston right back, you know what’s next. WHAMMO!! Sit down Stef. Red card, Beeston down to 10 men. “He got sent off last week too”, said one of their players. Only minutes later Papa was involved again, some good work holding off the Beeston midfield resulting in a free kick just inside our own half. “Dirty Ba$t**D just bit me”, not seen or heard by the referee. Beeston getting upset facing another defeat. An proficient victory in not so perfect conditions, three points away at Beeston. Good result.
