Match Report - 25 Sep 2022, Leeds Modernians Football Club Mods U15s beat Stanley United
Mods put last week’s disappointment behind them with a magnificent fightback at Cookridge Lane this morning against Stanley United.
There was a hint of autumn in the air as the game kicked off in ideal playing conditions. With the note pad and pen still in the reporter’s pocket and the time on the stop watch not even having got into double figures, Ollie was somehow picking the ball out of his net. A loose ball at the back was pounced on by the Stanley striker who buried it into the far corner.
Mods looked stunned but Freddie came close seven minutes in but things went from bad to worse for Mods soon after. Failing to clear their lines resulted in another composed finish from Stanley who were 2 nil up with only ten minutes on the clock. Alfie, playing only his second game for Mods then fed a through ball to debutant Reuben but with Stanley covering well at the back, the threat was extinguished.
Ollie looking sharp, alert and smelling unusually fresh was then called into action to tip over the bar from a long range Stanley shot . Mods were getting a foothold into the game now with Alfie having a shot saved and Alex going just wide with a glancing header from a great Archie corner. The pressure finally told just after the half hour mark when a classic Hoole combination reminiscent of yesteryear saw Alfie arriving at the back post to open his Mods account and half the deficit. Parity could have been restored before half time when Freddie saw an effort drift wide and another blocked by the keeper. Mods though were certainly back in the game and finished the half the stronger of the two teams.
Stanley started the second half as they had the first and only a minute in, the ref was pointing to the spot after a foul inside the box. Only Ollie stood between Mods having an uphill battle in the second half. He needn’t have worried, the penalty bent like a banana to Ollie’s right and the team breathed a sigh of relief.
Then something remarkable happened……….
Archie whipped in a corner into the box and Harry’s attacking header found it’s way into the back of the net. A goal from a corner ! game on, 2-2. Mod’s were playing with confidence now with Owen having a go from way out , always worth it on the uneven surface. Twelve minutes in and another Hoole combination almost paid dividends again as the keeper blocked again from Freddie. Then, as the game entered the final quarter, Alfie fed Freddie after showing great skill and composure in the box. Freddie provided the cultured finish after cutting inside past the despairing defender. Mods were in the mood to turn the screw now and then and then……………………..
Archie delivered another corner and Alex up from the back ghosted in to see it home. Two goals from two corners, incredible.
Stanley looked dejected and were limited to a couple of long range efforts. Freddie, looking to capitalize, burst down the right with Josh in the middle but the cross couldn’t quite find it’s intended target. Second half substitute Josh showed real dexterity in the box, dribbling into the six yard box with Stanley somehow managing to clear. It was becoming only a matter of time before Mods scored again and then, BOOM, Alfie doubled his account with a fantastic long range effort that the Stanley keeper could only stand and admire. Mods were turning on the style now with defenders wanting to come to the goal scoring party. George was fed through brilliantly by Archie and went agonisingly close and this was after an earlier long range effort.
In mattered not as the ref called time on the first win of the season. 5-2 Mods, well played lads
