Match Report - 05 Dec 2020, Leeds Modernians Football Club 1sts beat 2nds

Leeds Modernians 5 – Leeds Modernians reserves 0

A fantastic performance from Leeds Modernians 1st team saw them beat the reserve side with a resounding 5-0 victory with goals from Wasim Khan (brace), Captain Danny Claxton, substitutes Lee Glossop and Reiss Silva.
The game was set up by both managers in order to build up fitness prior to the restart of the league next Saturday. It was a tentative start from both teams with the midfield becoming an area which both sets of players struggled to maintain control of.
The deadlock was broken when a cross from the left-hand side was delivered to Adam Hamilton who had his shot saved by keeper Matt Gibbons, but the rebound fell to Khan who slotted the ball home. Prior to halftime the 1st team doubled their lead following a run down the left-hand side from Danny Claxton who delivered a good cross to Hamilton again who had his shot stopped by an acrobatic save from Gibbons in goal but the rebound fell kindly to Wasim Khan who scored his second of the game.
The reserves started the game brightly but could not break down a tight and solid 1st team defence. They were in the game until the first goal was scored and after that never looked like causing any trouble to create a comeback.
Manager Nick Powell who manages the Leeds Modernians 1st team, made four changes at halftime to try out different tactics and formations in preparation of the resumption of League fixtures next week.
The second half started poorly for the Reserve side following kick off after a smart interception was made by captain Claxton who ran towards goal and slotted his shot into the left-hand corner of the net. Gibbons had no chance and was left stranded in goal following a lack of defensive cover.
1st team substitutes Charlie Glossop and Reiss Silva both made a positive impression using their speed and crossing to their advantage. Both kept on catching the Reserve side’s defence out numerous times. Glossop missed two glorious chances to increase the lead but his attempted chip over the keeper was always going over the net and minutes late Glossop failed to make any contact to a cross that was perfect from the left hand side from Reiss Silva. Charlie Glossop did finally get his goal following a break from a corner which left the Reserve’s defence exposed and wide open, Glossop converted, and the Reserve side had no answer to stop the 1st team attackers who were causing havoc for their defenders.
Reiss Silva also had a good chance to put the game beyond doubt, but his shot was narrowly wide of the post. He made up for the miss minutes later as following a poor freekick from the Reserves and the 1st team counterattacked them leaving two defenders with four Mod players charging at them, the ball was passed to Silva who this time made no mistake and chipped the ball over the keeper to round off a comfortable victory for Leeds Modernians 1st Team, who saw the game out and made sure the attackers of the Reserve side did not have any shot on targets. It was a very good performance from the firsts making sure that they stayed strong defensively but and being ruthless in front of goal.
Powell gave his thoughts after the game ‘I thought the game was pretty equal until the 2nds lost Adam Gillott to injury. Once he went off and we took the lead I think we controlled the game and scored some good goals. Hopefully we can take that form in front of goal into next weeks game away at league leaders Kellingley.”
