Match Report - 12 Sep 2009, Leeds Modernians Football Club 3rds beat Ealandians III
One game, one win and 3 points in the proverbial bag represented quite a departure from Mullin manager's traditional approach to the start of the season; lose your first 8 games, play half your team out of position, concede a goal from at least 75% of the attacks that you face and "take it from there". Despite the millions splashed out in the transfer window, it was home grown talent Jake Williams that stole the show with a superb performance of guile, graft and incision that belied his 16 and a half years. As the Williams sisters begin their slow but surely inevitable decline, its time for the Williams brothers to take centre stage.
It was a solid, if slightly prosaic, performance, underpinned by fine defending and a mightily impressive debut from young Sam in goals. Mods conceded the first goal after 40 minutes, against the run of most of the play, but, buttressed by the wind and the slope, were by far the better team in the second half. Fine goals from Matty Lewis, who at last has latched on to the fact that the last 60 minutes of a game is not a warm down, and Robbie 'super sub' Wood sealed the win, despite a rather frantic and nervy last few minutes of opposition pressure.
Which just leaves the post match press conference;
"its in our hands now, its ours to lose" (Mullin)
"its always nice to score, particularly when its your first goal, or for that matter shot on target, since junior school" (Matty Lewis)
"I'm chuffed to bits with the man of the match award, I'm just a teeny bit worried that I am actually 25 years younger than half of the team (Jake Williams)
