Match Report - 12 Dec 2009, Leeds Modernians Football Club 3rds beat Old Modernians IV
At last the gloating was over, and the actual game began. We expected a fired up fourth team, with one or two players with points to prove, and that is exactly what we got. Whilst I felt we were clearly the better team in the first half, and rarely looked like conceding, we also created few clear cut opportunities against a defence expertly marshalled by Ashton Rowe. A 2-0 lead at half time, courtesy of a sublime finish from the prolific Robbie Woods and a hefty deflection, was flattering.
Fully expecting to make the most of that good fortune in the second half, it was something of a shock to spend the first 15 minutes penned back by a 4th team who remained, despite the deficit, fiercely committed. If Adam Binns, understandably a bit rusty, but still alarmingly fast, had put away a great chance to make it 2-1, we would have been in a for a very stern test. But Sam Lawson made a tremendous save and we had the opportunity to ring some changes from a position of strength. The substitutions steadied the proverbial ship, and Ewen capped off a very fine performance with our third goal and the points were, at last, in the bag.
Whilst it is clearly their business and none of ours, the 4th team, when they have stopped patting each other on the back, justifiably, for a fine and committed performance, need to ask why, with so many fine players, they are where they are. If only they could put away their chances at the same rate I can put commas into a sentence, they would soon be climbing the table.
The after match press conference----
" It was a tense build up all week, defeat was not an option, we all knew we had to do everything to be at our absolute peak, and whilst it was a massive temptation, I am just so glad I said no to that 14th pint of Guinness on Friday night" (Ian Vinall)
" I don't like to brag, but I have now scored in each of the last 2 centuries, and I just hope I can keep that run going" (Rich Ewen)
" Vinall scored last week, Ewen this. I am starting to think this, just might, be our season. If I can just get 90 minutes (or even 60) out of Matty Lewis----" (Mullin manager, getting completely carried away")
