Match Report

Match Report - 23 Jan 2010, Leeds Modernians Football Club 3rds beat Huddersfield Amateur III

At last, after a hugely elongated mid winter break, we had some answers to the burning questions. Just how many calories and pints had Ian Vinall consumed since he last broke into a sweaty jog? Had Richard Marsh overcome his 'mental issues'? Could Matty Lewis cross the rubicon and share the pitch with one of his own team's subs? Was Tom Breider really worth a place in the third team, or had he become the Lee Sharpe of the Old Modernians? Would Robbie Wood ever talk to a team mate? Would Chris Roy ever cut inside and use his 'other foot'? What is the point of the Chilcot enquiry?

After 90 mins, we had most of the answers. A lot, possibly but it's too early to say as its a 12 step programme, no, yes, no, probably not and absolutely no idea. We scored very early and and in truth the result was never really in doubt for the next 88 minutes. Whilst we looked decidedly rusty, the opposition, with the exception of their goalkeeper who was outstanding, were even rustier.

On the plus side Matty Lewis put in some truly fantastic crosses and dead balls, Jake Williams looked just as good as he was before Christmas, Sean Doherty was simply far too good for the opposition and Marchy and Carl did what all good subs should do, improve the team. As for Tom Breider, whilst it was great to have such a lovely lad and massively talented player in our team, I find it incredibly hard to believe there are 26 players better than him at our club.

On the down side----bollocks to the down side. No need, yet, to dwell on the negatives, but a massive month beckons and every individual must ensure they do all they possibly can to ensure they are at the very top of their game.

MOM Sean Doherty

At the post match press conference;

"When I was dropped from the firsts, and I promised myself I wouldn't spend the whole season in the seconds, this wasn't quite what I had in mind", (Tom 'baffled' Breider).

"People said I shouldn't have taken the penalty 'cus I am just not using to being that far up the pitch. Personally, I thought it was in, and then this huge bloke I'd never seen before, in a green jersey, appeared from nowhere and just caught it. Whats all that about?" (Sam Young)

"Its a disgrace, Aquilani gets more minutes than me, and he is rubbish" (Matty Lewis)

"I thought Matty was looking a bit tired, so I left it another 55 minutes then took him off" (Mullin Manager)
