Match Report - 13 Mar 2010, Leeds Modernians Football Club 1sts beat Leeds Medics (Terry Marflitt Trophy Quarter Final)
Mick Birch's first XI played at home for the first time since November and overcame a strong Leeds Medics team. The pitch was in great condition, and the tie was well contested and refereed outstandingly. Our work rate was such that Medics didn't play with their customary rhythm, and a tight first half ended goalless. On around 65 minutes, excellent work by the outstanding Danny Forrest led to an opportunity that Stef Papa converted emphatically from close range. Just a few minutes later, Simon Oliver stooped to nod home following a corner. Predictably, Medics rallied and generated considerable momentum but our defence absorbed the pressure manfully, with central pair Zac Brown and Ben Mallinson [playing together for the first time] both highly impressive. Keeper Tyrone Sarucan acquitted himself very well when required with a couple of exceptional blocks . We thought we had pinched a third when Ryan Unsworth turned and rifled in a low drive which appeared destined to find the bottom corner, only for the Medics' keeper to produce a save of breathtaking quality. The final few minutes saw one way traffic towards our goal, and we were eventually breached when a through ball found a Medics player in space, with time to finish coolly. The remaining couple of minutes were nerve-wracking, but we felt that we did enough to merit the victory. Medics and their manager, Steve Ledger, were as classy as ever, and we are delighted with both the performance and a tremendous result. We now have to strive to deliver similar performances on the run-in, starting against the formidable Medics' Reserve team who head Senior B.
