Match Report - 02 Oct 2010, Leeds Modernians Football Club 3rds beat Heckmondwike GSOB
Some sloppy defending meant this as a game we had to win twice. 2-0 up and coasting, courtesy of a fine finish from Dougie and a finish from Marchie, the only way I could see them get back in the game was if Ash were to try and nutmeg their best player, on the half way line, when most of our team was committed forward. Which, amazingly was precisely what happened and said opposition best player then raced half the length of the field to finish with a superb curled shot in the far corner leaving Matty 'looking the part in goals'Lewis helpless.
Their equaliser early in the second half was another gift. As for who to blame (and someone always is), the camp was split. Manager Mullin thought his pass back from the half way line to the edge of our box into the vicinity of, yes their best player, was not really that dangerous, and the rest of the team thought it was atrocious defending asking to get punished, which it duly was. Football, its all about opinions.
Thankfully, it wasn't too costly as the prodigal son Pete Clarke shook off the turtles to put us back in front, Adam Binns converted his 17th gilt edged chance, and Joe Frazer finished emphatically in injury time to ensure a compelling final scoreline.
MOM Danny Claxton
At the press conference;
"I've not had a great start to the season, but I've always said, just give me 17 nigh on unmissable chances, and I'll stick one away" (Adam Binns)
"Its funny really, I've tried that nutmeg on about 10 occasions, and it's never come off (the penny drops for Ashton)
" I was away working with turtles for 6 months, and it was said they are the slowest mammal on earth, but I just couldn't help thinking, but have they ever seen Ian Vinal?" (Pete Clarke)
