Match Report - 06 Nov 2010, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds beat Beeston OB
A huge game this early in the season, Mods could extend their lead to 6 points or Beeston could draw level on points at the top of Division 1 and the Mods prepared for the game like it was a cup final. Beeston arrived haphazardly with their GK seemingly still putting his gloves on as the match kicked off and maybe it was this difference in pre-match preparation that gave Mods the edge.
Dave Bergen came back into the heart of defence alongside Danny Claxton and Rich Ewen was welcomed back into central midfield to partner the ever present Josh Williams. Thanks to Dave Willis for moving up from the third team at late notice to sub after Dan Bradford could not shake off the injury he sustained last week.
The Mods started at a fantastic pace, moving the ball well and retaining possession without causing too many problems then Beeston came back into the game, using outstanding movement to get in behind the Mods back line on a couple of occasions only for the final ball to let them down or the reserves back four to get a vital block in at the right moment. After this spell though the Mods started to settle in and become more confident, Jake Williams had a low drive tipped round the post and Andy Atkins saw an unchallenged header from a Shaduwa cross miss the target from 6 yards. It looked as though the Reserves had lost their touch in front of goal until in the 35th minute, left back Andy Shirley converted a clos range header from a well delivered Josh Williams free kick.
The Mods would have been happy with a 1-0 lead at half time but with 2 minutes to go until the break Simon Lewis drifted out left to collect a long ball then drove past the defender, displaying great strength and composure he then cut into the penalty area and pulled the ball back for strike partner Jake Williams to smash the ball into the roof of the net. Beeston did appeal for a free kick in the build up to the goal but the referee stood by his decision to let play continue. (HT 2-0)
With the next goal being all important Mods wanted to start the second half by taking the sting out of the game, Josh must have been distracted during this part of the team talk by dreams of C.O.D dominance as he gave the ball away straight from kick off and Beeston were able to mount some sustained pressure around the Mods box. This pressure never really amounted to any clear cut chances though as Bergen, Claxton, Shirley and Coulson stood firm and closed down like their lives depended on it.
As the half progressed Mods began to control the game with the midfield four picking their passes, moving well and finding space to continually test the Beeston back line. Richard March replaced the outstanding Rich Ewen on 70mins and it was Marchy who played a huge part in Mods killing the game off, sliding a brilliant ball into the box for Simon Lewis to turn and shoot, this effort was palmed into the path of Andy Atkins who calmly took a touch and placed the ball into the bottom corner to seal the win on 75mins.
Marchy almost made it four soon after driving a loose ball goalwards which was cleared off the line by some good last ditch defending from Beeston. On 80 mins Andy Shirley flew into a 50-50 challenge arriving a split second too late and suffering a deep gash on his right leg which needed lengthy treatment and saw him substituted for Dave Willis. Willis slotted straight in at left back and helped the Reserves see out the victory and move 6 points clear at the top.
Next up, Bramley away!
