Match Report - 12 Feb 2011, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds lost to Old Collegians

A shock, a wake up call, a kick up the backside, a good old fashioned thumping.

Old Collegians had a lot of new faces in their line up and they certainly did the trick as they started quickly and got quicker, their six nations tactics worked wonders as Mods Reserves failed to deal with long ball after long ball from the word go.

Collegians went 1 up after 4 minutes when their young forward controlled a long pass, slipped it through Byron's legs then curled a side footed effort beyond Featherstone in net. A minute later Byron tripped a Collegians midfielder in the box and a confidently taken penalty sent Featherstone the wrong way and doubled the lead. After 10 minutes it was 3 as a long throw in dropped inbetween a few bodies and as Featherstone dillied and defenders dallied a Collegians forward poked the ball in.

Mods were in need of a Newcastle style comeback, which if you remember started with a sending off and Collegians could have been reduced to 10 men on the half hour mark as Adie Shaduwa beat the last defender only for him to scythe the winger down just outside the area. The referee awarded the free kick and produced a yellow card after he explained that in his opinion the ball had been pushed slightly too wide for it to be a goal scoring opportunity. I would love to see a replay. (HT 3-0)

The second half started with Mods dominating posession and applying plenty of pressure but another long hoof up the field caused Mods more problems as the impressive Nolan for Collegians held off Byron, flicked it over his head and tucked the ball inside the post. Jake Williams pulled one back soon after when his turn and shot embarrassingly went through the big GK's legs but Collegians responded with a goal of their own after a long ball. Simon Lewis pounced on confusion in the Collegians area to pull another goal back but Collegians responded with a goal of their own after a long ball. Richard March made it 6-3 with a close range effort but Collegians responded with a goal of their own after a long ball and Josh Williams completed the scoring with a header from a Coulson corner. (FT 7-4)

Collegians tactics worked a treat and they did produce some excellent football in small glimpses to produce their chances so their young lads should savour the victory and build upon a competent performance.

Mods Reserves on the other hand need to learn from their mistakes quickly as school boy defending against Leeds Medics in the quarter final next saturday will be disastrous.
