Match Report - 26 Feb 2011, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds beat Shadwell
After the defeat at Collegians the Reserves were looking to bounce back and put pressure back on the teams at the top of Division 1.
There was a slight defensive reshuffle with skipper Dave Bergen away, Mike Sproats partnered Danny Claxton in the centre of defence with Mordue moving to right full-back. This meant that James Coulson switched to left midfield with Byron, Liam and Ackie starting on the touchline.
Mods began well getting the ball down and bringing wide players into the game early but Shadwell were resolute in defence and a much different proposition from the one we faced at Soldiers Bog. The opening chance of the game fell to Adie Shaduwa, attacking a cross from the left he somehow managed to hit the crossbar from 6 yards with the goal at his mercy. The breakthrough for Mods came after 20mins, a left sided corner dropped to Sproats at the edge of the box who flicked the ball to Simon Lewis, the forward swivelled and struck a right foot shot firmly into the bottom corner.
Shadwell responded positively and didn't let their heads drop, they played long balls up to isolated forwards who did their best to hold the ball up but the best attempt they could muster was from long distance and finished high and wide. Mods dominated posession and doubled their lead on 30mins with a fantastic counter attack, Sproats dropped a header into Josh who found Coulson on the left wing with a sublime pass, the winger composed himself and whipped in a pin point cross which Lewis met with his head powering the ball into the top corner. On 40mins Mods were awarded a penalty, Lewis was tripped in the box, only for Josh to see his penalty saved well. (HT 2-0).
Shadwell played with the wind behind them in the second half and their defenders tried to use long balls wherever possible but the Mods defence coped well. Jake Williams caused Shadwell defenders headaches all game and he was rewarded for his endeavours on 80mins, dribbling past 2 defenders and bursting into the box he was tackled well but as the ball broke he was quickest to react firing a shot across the GK and into the bottom corner. The only other attack of note saw Liam have a shot cleared off the line after rounding the Shadwell GK.
A solid performance by Mods showing much more character in defence.
Best wishes to Rich's cat.
