Match Report - 02 Apr 2011, Leeds Modernians Football Club 1sts beat Shire Academics

On a blustery - but generally fine – day, Mods overcame an unconvincing start to record an encouraging victory over a talented Shire team who competed well and scored a goal fit to grace any occasion, but who were – as I saw it – beaten by the better team on the day.
Shire’s YOBL scribe, Tinternet’s pre-match prediction noted that we have a “quality striker.....these days”. Some readers might infer a lack of respect towards our other strikers, although it’s not clear to whom Tinternet was referring. It may have been quality striker Jamie Duffy who once again showed class, composure, strength, application and twinkling feet. Or perhaps it was quality striker Jonny Wilson who ran the channels, showed for the ball, shepherded possession, fed his team-mates unselfishly and scored an exquisite goal on the turn from outside the box? It could have been quality striker Ryan Unsworth who started on the bench today, but who already has 13 goals this season. I suspect it was probably quality striker Alex Higgins who was unavailable today, as he was for our Shield semi-final last week. Presumably it wasn’t former quality striker and Brian Harvey look-alike, Stef Papa, who now operates as a converted quality left-sided midfielder, although his performance today was redolent of his time as a forward, as he gleefully converted four chances. Shire’s own quality strikers, Love and Croager have both performed well against us in the past but didn’t see enough of the ball to do any damage today.

Having roused ourselves after a poor opening 15 minutes, we began to play to feet, established a rhythm and had a considerable amount of incisive possession in the final third, and – at 2:0 – it felt as if one more goal might presage a hatful, but Shire’s Number 8 had other ideas. He impressed throughout, and having started on the right, he switched to play wide left, from where he killed an awkwardly bouncing ball expertly, took aim and let fly with an unstoppable arrow of a goal from somewhere near 30 yards. Half-time – 2-1.

The game was in the balance until Jonny Wilson’s unerring right-footed lash across the keeper into the far corner put us 3-1 up, and Papa weighed in with two further goals to secure the points in a rampant spell for us. Shire, as we knew they would, kept going and pulled one back with several minutes remaining but there was no way back.

The Shire centre-half who was commanding in the air and decent on the deck sustained a facial injury and we wish him well. Tony Lewis, as usual, officiated with common sense, excellent communication skills and a twinkle in his eye. He stayed on to run the line in our Reserves’ Hancock Cup victory over Thornesians, and let slip to members of the crowd that he had been a “hard left-back” known as “Flymo”.
