Match Report - 02 Apr 2011, Leeds Modernians Football Club 3rds lost to Leeds Independent
Once gain, we fell short at the death against a very good side. Despite being weakened by injuries and call ups, we put in another marvelously spirited performance, particularly in defence where Byron, Vinall, Kerr, Lazenby, and Matty were all outstanding. However, our failure to make anything, whatsoever, of the 4 or 5 very decent chances that came our way perhaps, possibly, points to our achilles heel, we simply do not convert enough of the chances we create.
Even so, with 6 or 7 minutes to go it remained 0-0, and a point was looking likely. A deflected shot put paid to that, and the second goal, coming within seconds of the final whistle, was incidental.
With any chances of promotion scupppered by this defeat, its hard not to start musing on where its gone wrong. Its never easy as a third team, particularly this season as a vibrant and double chasing second team have, as they should, pulled players up on a regular basis, to plug any gaps, or simply to reward outstanding third teamers with a run in the reserves. Even so, we were definitely good enough to have done better, and a failure to beat any side in the top half is a bit of an indictment. Also, Medics thirds have proved a third team can still be very successful, and they play 2 divisions higher.
I reckon we'll win the next 2 against lowly opposition, Colton and Central (probably 2-1 and 4-1) but then we have 3 games against teams in the top half. It would be nice to win 1 or 2 of those, just to prove we have, albeit belatedly, learnt how to beat the better sides.
