Match Report - 18 Apr 2011, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds lost to Bramley Juniors Reserves
The reserves were looking to bounce back from the disappointment of the defeat to Sandal, as they hosted a team who were struggling at the wrong end of the table. With manager Dale Mordue missing, 3rd team manager Tony Mullin was in charge of this must-win fixture.
Mods started the brighter and looked by far the most likely side to score, with several half chances created without ever really testing the Bramley keeper. It seemed only a matter of time before the pressure would pay off, but an incisive counter attack by the visitors ended with them taking the lead in the 25th minute. Mods didn't panic, however, and continued to be the dominant force as the half drew to a close. Mullin's words were positive at the interval, reiterating the fact that the Mods weren't doing a great deal wrong, and to continue playing as they were.
The second half began in much the same vein as the first, with Mods enjoying plenty of possession without really penetrating the Bramley defence. Bramley then doubled their lead in the 55th minute after a defensive error gifted the ball to the Bramley forward, who calmly beat Matty Lewis from 8 yards. Plenty of huff and puff in the remaining 35 minutes, but nothing to show from it, with Bramley looking the more likely to score again through some intelligent counter attacking.
It was a frustrating match, with Mods enjoying by far more possession than Bramley, but poor decision making in the final third meant that clear cut chances were few and far between. At the other end, defensive errors contributed to the Mods' downfall and Bramley capitalised. For the 3rd time in 9 days (twice versus Sandal and once versus Bramley), the old footballing cliche "they were better in both boxes" could be used. Mods must've had 10 or so more corners than Bramley, but didn't make them pay.
Whilst the league title looks like it's gone, there is still promotion to play for, with some tough games for all the teams in the mix between now and the end of the season. Mods will be glad of the 5 day break now after 7 games in 16 days.
