Match Report - 10 Sep 2011, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds drew with St. Nicholas
Poor defending, and an inability to punish the opposition's poor defending, saw Mods drop 2 points away at St Nicholas. With both full backs changed from last weeks' game, Mods looked shakey early with the defence struggling to be the organised unit they had been against Calverley. This was exposed inside 10 minutes as the St Nicks Forward managed to sneak in front of Shaduwa and finish into the bottom corner. Despite this setback, Mods looked the better side and had chances to draw the game level. After a spell of set-piece pressure from St Nicks, the Mods defence failed to react to an outswinging corner and a well-hit shot deflected off Bergan's shin past the helpess Lewis.
Mods needed to get a grip. Jon-Paul Craig opened his account for the Mods, a super finish into the top corner giving the 'keeper no chance, to pull the game back to 2-1. With all the pressure coming from the Mods it looked inevitable that an equaliser would only be a matter of time. However, Mods were their own worst enemy when a hopeful ball caught Bradford on the back foot the St Nicks forward lobbed Lewis from the edge of the box. St Nicks had been clinical, taking all three of their chances.
At half-time Mods regrouped, the challenge was clear. 2 goals, or more.
As the second half progressed it was clear that Mods were the better team, but weren't finishing the chances that were being created. The introduction of Coulson coincided with more clear-cut chances, one of which Jamie Duffy finished with class into the bottom corner. A series of set pieces went by with Mods unable to find the finishing touch, until Ryan unsworth lashed a shot into the bottom corner. 3-3, 10 minutes left.
Unfortunately Mods could not find the winner, but the teamwork and desire to right the wrongs of the first half were clear in the 2nd 45mins of the game.
A below-par performance, but a point nonetheless.
