Wilkinson Brace bags 3 points for the Mods!!

Steve Wilkinson bagged his first goals for the Mods to clinch 3 points after an indifferent second half threatened to undo all the hard work from the first 45 minutes.

Mods started brightly, working the ball into wide areas for the lively Shaduwa and March who were both supplying some excellent crosses for the two forwards, Duffy and Matthews. The Mods took the lead within 2 minutes, Richard March capitalising on defensive indicision from Batley to finish from close range. Mods' second goal came soon after, a superb finish from Adam Matthews to lob the keeper from a tough angle. More quality footballed followed as the Mods tore apart the Batley defence but couldn't quite apply the finishing touch to put the game to bed inside 25 minutes.

Mods paid the price when, against the run of play, a straightforward long throw was not dealt with by Bergan who allowed the opposition forward to flick the ball on. In trying to amend for the indicision, Bergan duly headed the ball into his own net. 2 O.G's in 2 games for Bergan, anyone remember Frank Sinclair?

Still the better side Leadbeater and Ewen were dominating the midfield and Duffy and Matthews wee exposing the oppositions defence time after time. Mods restored their two-goal lead through Steve Wilkinson. A good finish with his right foot. 3-1 at half time.

Once again. Mods were their own worst enemy when Batley managed to pull one back inside the first 10 minutes of the second half. Mallinson was caught out and the Batley forward finished well into the near post. The game had become scrappy, to the benefit of Batley. The ref was making some remarkably strange decisions, leaving both sides confused when free kicks were given and booking players when clearly unneccessary. One booking he did get right was that of Mallinson who, left frustrated after another seemingly innocuous challenge caused the ref to give a free kick 25-yards out (much to the amusement of the Batley side who also knew they had been given a free shot at goal for nothing), told the ref what he thought of the decision. It was to cost Mallinson 15 minutes later when he was given his second yellow for a 2-footed lunge.

Batley pulled level before the sending off though as the Batley forward was shrugged unfairly off the ball by Mallinson in the box, the penalty tucked away confidently. Mods were now in danger of losing out on any points at all. Cometh the hour, cometh Steve 'Ruuuuuuudddddd' Wilkinson to smash a left-footer into the top corner with 4 minutes to go. Like all players who haven't scored for 3 years Wilko hadn't a clue about his celebration and took the 'run as fast as you can pointing at the sky ' option. Great goal.

Despite the feeling that the game should have been won more comfortably, Mods hung on with 10 men to secure a valuable 3 points.
