Match Report - 29 Oct 2011, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds drew with Sandal Athletic

Mods faced largely the same Sandal side who bagged all 6 points against them last season and ultimately cost them a good chance of winning the Division 1 title. The Mods players who were part of those defeats were determined to make amends and take all 3 points today. Sandal appear to have lost the services of last season's top scorer, but are still a strong side who have some good ball-players and a never-say-die attitude all across the park.

The game started well for Mods who were on top from the first minute. The ball was played with confidence and authority across the back four and into the midfield, with the forward line of Williams and Unsworth holding the ball up well and making runs in behind their back four.

Sandal scored against the run of play, their central midfielder was allowed a free strike from 25 yards which he buried with aplomb. A great strike.

Mods did not let this affect their game plan and continued playing their passing game whenever possible. Richard March bagged the equaliser with a header which somehow managed to evade the keeper and end up in the roof of the net. 1-1 half time.

The second half began scrappily with both teams staying solid and not allowing the game to become too open. A delightful cross from the Mods right was met by March, who had no right to beat the sandal defenders in the air, and powered it into the roof of the net. 2-1.

Unfortunately for Mods, who needed 10 minutes of steady, controlled football, Sandal equalised within 2 minutes after a ball was clipped in with pinpoint accuracy and taken down by the opposition no. 10 and stuck past Lewis in the Mods goal. A crushing blow for the Mods who hard battled hard to get to 2-1.

The introduction of Jon-Paul Craig, Ben Bowman, and Ryan Kerr revitalised mods who bagged what seemed to be the winner on 85 mins. The returning Danny Clemence slotted home at the second attempt to cap an excellent performance. However, it was not to be. Sandal were not beaten and threw everything at Mods for the last 5 minutes. With virtually the last kick of the game a cross was flicked on to the back post and buried, giving Lewis no chance.

A draw was a fair result on the day as neither team played significantly better or worse than the other, but Mods will feel that they could have taken all 3 points had the team raised the performance to what they are capable of. The best is yet to come...
