Match Report - 19 Nov 2011, Leeds Modernians Football Club Juniors U15 drew with Shadwell Reserves

By Oli Lines.
ModsV finally snapped their 4-game losing streak with a 0-0 draw away to Shadwell Reserves. Dave Collins was welcomed back in goal in a closely fought affair that could have gone either way.

Both teams started well and it was an evenly matched contest for much of the 1st half. Mods were playing better football, but Shadwell were by no means playing badly. We had some good chances, especially from corners. Tim was putting in fantastic corner after fantastic corner, but nobody could get on the end of it, or when they did it was to no avail.

Andy Morris had a couple of chances from cleared corners, but one attempt went wide whilst the other, a thunderbolt which was sailing in, struck a Shadwell defender in the stomach and winded him.

Shadwell had some good attacks, with their main source of threat also coming from corners. They nearly scored on multiple occasions from corners, but Dave had other ideas and made some brilliant saves to keep the scores level.

Scot Gamble had a great chance towards the end of the half when the ball sat up for him about 12 yards out, but his header went just over the bar.

HT: Shadwell Reserves 0-0 Old Mods V

The 2nd half started the way the 1st ended; pressure from both sides but no breakthrough. Chris O’Reilly was working relentlessly upfront as per usual, but he had no luck on the scoring front. Andy and Scot were winning the midfield battles and trying to play in Chris and Tim, but the shots were either wide or saved.

John Jessop was brought on for Howie, who had played solidly at left-back, after about an hour to try and find that elusive goal, but it wasn’t looking like being our day.

Shadwell had some good chances themselves, but, like us, they also couldn’t take them. The deadlock was nearly broken when Tim was played through and had the whole of the opposition’s half to himself, but he was wrongly adjudged to have been offside (even though it looked a lot like he was standing in our half).

By now we had taken control of the game and if anyone was going to score, it was us. Benno almost provided the goal when he found himself 1-on-1 with the keeper about 15 yards out, but his shot flew across the face of the goal.

Andy and Phil were taken off for me (Oliver) and Bryan with about 10-15 minutes left, with Benno filling in at right-back and me going in right midfield. Shadwell had clawed themselves back in to the game and won 3 corners in the space of about 5 minutes. We managed to clear the ball each time, even if it was a slightly panicky clearance on more than one occasion.

A crunching tackle by a Shadwell defender on Benno, which sounded rather painful, gave us a free kick in a good area, but the ball was cleared to safety.

Chris nearly got a last-minute winner after some neat interplay with Tim, but unfortunately his low shot was saved.

FT: Shadwell Reserves 0-0 Old Mods V

Man of the Match was Chris O’Reilly for non-stop effort from the first whistle to the last.

Overall, it was a solid performance from everyone and it felt good not to lose and keep a clean sheet in the process.

Next week is the return game against Old Thornesians IV, whom we beat 2-0 earlier on this season, so there could be a win on the cards.

From Benno....
Couple of extra things....Mad Dog made an incredible save in the 2nd half to a shot that was, seconds after the shot was unleashed, ruled to be from an off-side position, but Dave was not to know that.
We have now conceded 12 goals in 6 games with Dave in goal and 20 goals in 4 games without Dave. Says it all really. Well played DC.
The tackle that was on me....yes it hurt, but I screamed like a Banshee!
