Match Report - 03 Dec 2011, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds lost to Grangefield OB
Mods second league defeat of the season was inflcted by Grangefield in game where both teams tried to play quality football despite the difficult conditions.
Mods started well, going ahead through Damien Mellor following a corner. It was a deserved lead as Mods had started as the brighter team, and could have doubled their advantage inside 15 minutes as chances went begging. Grangefield began to settle and played some good flowing football, using their excellent forward players to build pressure. This pressure paid off as a grangefield player danced past 3 defenders in the box and finished confidently into the bottom corner.
The remainder of the first half was played out fairly evenly until a lucky shot from the Grangfield midfielder looped over Matty Lewis, who had an outstanding game, hit the bar and post, and went in.
The second half was end to end stuff. As Mods searched for an equaliser and pushed players on, Grangefield created a number of chances on the break but couldn't find a way past Lewis. Lewis even managed to offer the Grangefield forward one last chance by knocking a goal-kick straight to him, but still couldn't beat him in the resulting 1v1.
Mods almost snatched an equaliser but the giant Grangefield keeeper thwarted Ryan Unsworth when he seemed favourite to score.
In all, Grangefield probably desrved the win but Mods were disappointed that they couldn't grab an equaliser from the chances they created. Losing 2-1 away at top of the league is not something to be overly disappointed with, and Mods will take heart from knowing that they competed for the full 90 against the runaway league leaders.
