Match Report - 03 Mar 2012, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds beat Collingham Juniors OB
Mods took all 3 points at Collingham Sports Ground courtesy of a Ryan Unsworth hat-trick.
The starting 11 was shuffled again with changes most noteabe in midfield. Leadbeater, Blake, and Coulson in for Ewen, Craig, and Shaduwa. Jonny Wilson returned from holiday to partner Unsworth up front, with Bergan slotting back in at centre back alongside skipper for the day Sproats, with Mellor and Wilkinson keeping their places at left and right back respectively.
The game started at a good tempo and Collingham, who had already started their warm up when Mods arrived at 1:50, looking the brighter of the two sides and hassled Mods into basic errors. In the first 10 minutes Mods must have made more errors in posession than they did for the last 80. Collingham went in front after a long ball upfield took an awful bounce and decieved Matty Lewis. Colingham deserved their lead at this point, though the manner they took it was somewhat fortunate. 1-0 Collingham
The goal seemed to spur the Mods players into life though and the midfield quartet we beginning to pull the strings. Blake and Leadbeater were looking better than their opposite numbers and were starting the dictate the pace and direction of play. A super Mods move, that involved what seemed like every man on the pitch, resulted in a fine through ball from Blake to Unsworth who tucked away with a composed finish. 1-1
The remainder of the half saw Mods grow in confidence and play the ball to feet and with confidence whenever the opportunity arose. Half Time 1-1.
The second half just needed more of the same from Mods and they were given the perfect start to the second half when a Collingham player handled a cross in the box. Penalty dispached by Unsworth, 2-1 Mods.
Soon after Mods made it 3-1 after another superb finish from Unsworth, whose movement off the ball had given the Collingham defenders trouble all afternoon. Mods then continued to dominate the game and coud have had a couple more but for determined Collingham defending to clear off the line from Mods attacks. The indroduction of Shaduwa, Craig, and Ewen from the bench added fresh legs and composure from experienced heads.
A good afternoon for Mods, on a day only affected by the wind for two 10 minute periods in each half!
On a final note, thanks to Collingham who have an excellent set-up. The pitch was good, the changing rooms spacious and with their own showers, and the clubhouse welcoming. Hopefully they will pick up more points and continue to grow as the football arm of the Collingham Sports Association.
