Mods moved up to second in the league as they rediscovered their scoring touch with a 5-0 haul over bottom club Cents, Messer’s Binns, Stenger(2), Douglas and Bowman shouldering the goal scoring responsibilities. It was not all good news for the home side as forwards Adam Binns and Chris ‘Blimey’ O’Riley both sustained serious knee injuries and could be out for some time.

The match started with Tinsill Top bathed in sunshine and with the natural sprinklers turned on before the game the pitch was suitably greased. With regular captain Jodie Lazenby struggling with a virus, the armband was handed over to defensive linchpin Andy Shirley. In another change Andy Hollings showed his versatility by filling in and covering our mini right back crisis.

The game started with the home side on the front foot and it wasn’t long before chances were being created. However, it took a moment of real class to break the deadlock. Adam Binns was afforded too much space in the area and his uncharacteristic classy finish into the top corner gave the Mods the lead. The arrears were doubled shortly after when a Ben Bowman freekick was met at the far post by Tommy Stenger who had the simplest of jobs, kissing the ball past the despairing keeper.

James Douglas, who had the Cents right back on toast all afternoon scored a carbon copy of his goal against Heckmondwike, when he cut inside and unleashed a fine low drive into the near post. At 3-0 down the game was up for Cents as they had been struggling to score all season and from that point on Mods began to enjoy themselves, that was until Adam Bills was involved in a innocuous looking tangling of legs which resulted in the striker having to depart early, scans revel that he has cartilage damage and a return date has not yet been set. Chris O’Riley replaced him up top shortly before the interval.

Adrian Gilligan replaced the diseased riddled Lazenby at the break which allowed Bowman to move more central and partner Tim Hill and Tommy Stenger. It wasn’t long into the second half when the striker jinx struck again, this time O’Riley was on the end of a strong challenge and damaged his knee also, he had to go off and replaced with now player manager Andy Hick who slotted it right back.

Any hope of a dramatic turnaround following a second reshuffle was quashed when Stenger got on the end of another Bowman cross to notch his second and Mods forth. Ben ‘the postman’ Bowman (he always delivers, except on Sundays) then completed the scoring himself when he combined well with Gilligan to guide the ball past the helpless keeper from close range.

Five without reply for the Mods as they move up to second in the league and another impressive display from the unsung defensive hero’s. The ever changing back line of Bradford, Rowe, Hollings, Shirley and Hick ensured that Dawtry between the sticks was a mere spectator. No doubt he will be more involved next week when Mods travel to fellow title contenders Almondburians who will be looking to bounce back after their first defeat of the season.

Final note is to wish Adam ‘you can’t mark pace’ Binns and Chris ‘Blimey’ O’Riley a speedy recovery from their injuries. Get well soon chaps.
