Match Report - 22 Sep 2012, Leeds Modernians Football Club 1sts beat Rothwell Town (League Cup)
Mods v Rothwell town (league cup)
Mods travelled to Rothwell on the back of some fine form in the league, which leaves us sitting top of the division. For most this fixture was welcomed. Everyone enjoys a cup run, a chance to play some of the big boys from higher divisions, but one mod doesn’t! Si LeSwis was dropped from today’s squad after publically stating “he didn’t care for the cup”. This left manager Birch no other option than to rest Si for bigger upcoming league games. After having UNsuccessful reconstructive surgery on his nose, superstar left back Danny Todd was still absent as he entered his second week of six on the side-lines. Joe Clapham (scores when he wants) also reluctantly pulled out of the squad midweek as he aims to get himself back to full fitness.
It’s been common knowledge that manager Birch hasn’t been sleeping well recently, as his brain has been working overtime in an attempt to figure out how to fill the void left by Mike Sproats who has left the mods once again. Rumours flying around the changing rooms are that Michael has joined rivals F.C Headingley whilst others believe he’s taking a long break from the game to assess and really find his true position. With this problem in mind, a hung over Birch went with the following team:
Tom Day was picked in the sticks with goal scoring defender Si Oliver at right back, Steve Wilkinson (@maddog_mod) took up the left back position with rocks Zac Brown and Danny Claxton in the middle. Last weeks man of the match and hatrick hero Jonny Wilson started on the right, with Stef Papa back in the 11 down the left alongside midfield maestro Alex Pouncett and goal scoring midfielder Josh Williams in the centre of the park. The current club top goal scorer and drain doctor Danny Forrest was up top partnered by 1st team penalty taker Alex Higgins.
Tom Day threw up a bombshell 45 minutes before kick off by informing Birch that if the game went to extra time he would have to leave. This and the fact that Rothwell took 4 points off mods last year was enough incentive to get the game won in normal time, and have a little bit of payback. Blessed with absolutely fantastic weather on a surface, which apart from needing a little trim, was perfect for good football mods kicked off the first half.
It lasted 46 minutes and consisted of missed chances, a Rothwell goal and Mods never really getting above 60%.
Mods controlled possession straight from the start and immediately started creating chances. Some good work down the right saw Jonny Wilson break into the box early on, only to see his effort comfortably saved by the keeper (should have cut it back). More chances came and went until the 22nd minute when Mods thought they’d made the breakthrough. Stef papa intelligently pin pointed a pacey cross straight onto the Rothwell centre half’s raised arms, which left the ref with no choice other than to point to the spot. Up stepped goal machine Alex Higgins only to see his effort saved down to the keeper’s right. 30 minutes played and Rothwell took the lead midway through the second half against the run of play. A scramble in the middle of the pitch which could have easily resulted in a free kick to mods wasn’t dealt with, and the town midfielder took the break of the ball into his stride and hit a powerful shot from 28 yards which beat Thomas down to his right. 1 – 0 Rothwell. Mods kept creating chances and the best of them seen an Alex Pouncett corner meet the head of Zac brown free in the box who was unable to control his header as it went narrowly over the bar.
Half time came and the lads despite being 1 – 0 down were all comfortable that if we lifted the work rate and kept playing football the chances would keep coming and we’d win the game.
The second half kicked off and almost immediately Mods made the breakthrough. An Alex Pouncett corner was met by who else but Si Oliver, who rose like a salmon and nutted the ball into the back of the net for his second of the season. 1 – 1. 50 minutes gone and Rothwell had their best chance of the second half. The Rothwell centre forward managed to get on the end of a whipped corner from the right, only to see his shot well saved by tom day which then produced a bit of a scramble which ended up with the town player turning in the 6 yard box only to screw his shot wide of the target. Jonny Wilson was forced to retire on the 65th minute as he battled with a hamstring injury. William brown was his replacement whilst shortly after Daniel Clemence replaced Josh Williams. Mods kept pushing and were increasingly getting closer to breaking Rothwell town’s offside trap. On the 80th minute Mods got their reward. Tom Day picked out a superb 70 yard pass which was exquisitely brought down by the drain doctor, who took a touch, composed himself and slotted it home for a 2 – 1 Mods lead. Forrest could have had his second minutes later, as he found himself 1 on 1 with the keeper only to see his effort saved by town’s number 1.
The final whistle went and Mods advanced into the next round of the cup. We didn’t hit top gear and were far from our best but did more than enough on the day to warrant our victory on what seems to be abit of a bogey ground for us, in terms of putting the ball in the net! The disappointment that there would be no food after the game was cushioned by news that the 2nd, 3rd and 4th team were all victorious making it a good day for the club!
Next will be a nice change as we will be turning right out of the Modernians car park, heading into the countryside down to Ilkley town. Another big game as we aim to leave Ben Rhydding sports club still top of the table!
