Match Report - 03 Nov 2012, Leeds Modernians Football Club Juniors U15 beat Ealandians III
Ealandians are top of the division, by all accounts playing good football, we had no recognised keeper, so, I (Benno) volunteered to be keeper, and a look at the teamsheet says all there is to know about what type of team we had out..good players, but we hardly knew one another.
So....A bit o banter, a bit o nonsense from me (what's new there then?), a good warm up (getting to know each other etc and more party tricks from me) and we started the game in good spirits and confident that we could do well.
It was an awful pitch (worst i've played on for years), but so what. We got on with it and we dominated.
It continued like this for most of the first half and with 5 mins to go we were 3-0 up (Shane, Chally, Callum).
Then a free kick 25 yards out sailed over my head and into the net.
A minute later they broke our back line for the first time and I was beaten on a one on one.
The 2nd half started same as the first half.
We went 2-4 up.
A daft goal to concede by us (3-4) was then cancelled out immediately (3-5), only to then concede two goals in quick succession, one an unstoppable top corner floater, the other a bit of a "I ain't a keeper guv' goal.
5-5 after we had pretty much dominated.
Was it to be a case of missed chances and no keeper (i had 'let in' 3 of the 5) going to cost a win?
Nope. A save by me (cor), quickly followed by an Ealandians o.g. (an attempted clearance 6 yards out that would normally have been enough and sailed away instead flopped onto the back of another Ealandian player and dribbled over the goal line...one of those games) and another fine goal from chally finished things off nicely.
The pitch played a massive part in the game and both sets of defences and keeper's struggled to cope in the duck pond penalty areas at both ends.
We managed the conditions better and outplayed Ealandians in al areas of the pitch.
A much deserved win for a much changed Mods6th team.
Some good, young, new player's on show (Jake, Will, Adam I'd not met before) and I hope their time with a few oldies has given them a taste of what the Mods are all about and they stick around, attend training and become Mods player's and grace higher teams for the rest of the season.
Big shout out to Rich Burns who was a good, calm head in the middle of the bog and made sure the team ticked over and never panicked, and to Gary for getting a team together, encouraging the lads to play footy in the bog and making all the right decisions (such as 'Benno, we don't have a keeper, any chance...?') at the right time.
No man of the match awarded as it was an all round, good team effort and performance.
