Match Report - 08 Dec 2012, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds lost to Calverley United

A lacklustre display by Mods saw them lose ground on the early-season title chasers.

A strong 14 man squad was available for today's game but we ended up with only 1 sub, limiting options severely. Dan Jamieson replaced the Thailand-bound Bowman at right back and Si Blake slotted in on right midfield, with Nathan Clark returning to partner Ryan Unsworth up front.

The game started with mods shifting the ball quite well. However, a worrying trend of trying to play a long direct ball with the wind behind was emerging and lasted the whole second half. Time and again different Mods players chose to play a 40 yard pass in the hope that Unsworth would have made a run to get on the end of an inch-perfect pass. It didn't work. That approach will never work and the team needs to take collective responsibility for offering better options when in possession and choosing not to give the ball away in such a cheap manner.

Calverley took the lead mid way through the first half after 2 Mods players were indecisive about who was to keep the ball, and the one Calverley player took the ball away and gave it to the striker who stuck it in the top corner. Mods had been given a warning earlier in the game as their central midfielder hit the post after taking advantage of a lost ball in midfield.

Unfortunately, Mods created little of note in the first half and the half-time words were a question of desire and commitment to the cause, not something that should even need to be said.

The second half went much the same way as the first. The introduction of Adam Todd on the right midfield allowed Si Blake to be more effective in a central position, Adam looking like a good acquisition, offering options and delivering some good balls into the box.

Calverley added the second goal, which was surely a double offside (the player who flicked the ball on and then the player who tapped it in), and a third before Mods were given a consolation by the ref who saw a tap on Acki's ankles as a foul, then realised it was inside the box and awarded the spot-kick. Unfortunately the scoring was not finished there as Calverley scored straight from our thrown-in as the ball squirmed under Lewis's body from 20 yards.

The Calverley keeper played a big part in their win, repeatedly catching crosses and making some excellent saves. However, he spent much of his game collecting over hit passes and having to take the odd goal kick.

Not many positives to take from today's game unfortunately. To avoid mid-table mediocrity again we must lift every aspect of our game, there is the quality to do well and be in the mix come April but the attitude and desire to influence the game must come first. That starts at training on Wednesday.
