Match Report

Match Report - 08 Dec 2012, Leeds Modernians Football Club 5ths beat Huddersfield Amateur III

We started the match on Saturday determined to make ammends for the previous weeks result at almondury, however we knew it wasn't going to be easy against an Amateurs team that play free flowing football and had beaten us only a few weeks ago.

We started brightly with some good attacking football and commited tackling. Unfortunately we didn't capitalise on this and as has happened before this season we found ourselves a goal down from an excellent move from the opposition. Soon after we equalised through some good battling by Josh which led to a hand ball and free kick on the edge of the area. Up stepped Wheater to curl it top corner.... then he thought better of it and just hammered it down the middle and it hit an unlucky defender and ended up in the back of the net!
Again Amateurs responded well and scored again from a probing ball 2-1, this was quickly followed by another and it was 3-1. From this point it could have been easy for heads to drop but they didn't and partnerships started forming all over the pitch, Stu was linking up excellently with Tony and Josh and Shane worked the right and George and Scott started to command the back line with authority. About 10 minutes before the end of the 1st half Blimey scored making it 3-2 which buoyed the team even more and we finished the half strongly.
At half time we felt confident and realised that we had to close the opposition down to prevent them whipping in dangerous crosses and be patient when they had the ball as they were excellent in possession. We started the second half with real purpose and Stu was a constant threat down the left and we soon got the breakthrough from a lovely Harry strike, 3-3. What followed was 10-15 minutes of the best football we have played all season! Joel was like a man possessed in the middle and Dave was bossing the centre and dropping in where needed along the back line. This pressure coupled with Tanks excellent distribution and the movement upfront led to 3 more goals in quick succession, a superb Wheater lob set up from Stu's excellent battling, another strike from Blimey and a Messi esque run and finish from Joel.
Amateurs didn't give up and played some more neat football and were only foiled by some excellent defending from the back line with Shane and Tony covering and clearing the ball with confidence ang George and Scott putting their bodies on the line and distributing the ball calmly. They did however get one back to make it 6-4. Jimmy came on for the injured Josh with 20 to go and showed some neat touches and well weighted passing. Stu set up a chance late on for Blimey to make it 7-4 but he dwelled too long before getting the shot away and it was blocked.

All in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable game, in part due to the excellent attitude and sportsmanship of Amateurs team.
The lads showed fantastic character coming back from 3-1 down. There was excellent passing and finishing from both sides and every mods player put in a huge effort right to the final whistle.
