Match Report - 23 Feb 2013, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds beat Beeston OB
Mods took advantage of an eventually dispirited Beeston to take all 3 points and strengthen their challenge at the top of the table.
Bowman and Unsworth were both absent but with Dale and Jake joining the squad from the 1sts it meant tough selection decisions had to be made. Si Blake, Phil Gillett and Jonny Wilson were the unlucky ones who missed out today so the starting lineup was: Lewis; Jamieson, Bergan, Wilkinson, Mellor; Smith, Mordue, Todd; Atkins, Clark, Williams.
The prematch talk had focused on not taking 3 points for granted against a side that had put together a run of results that left them mid-table and seemingly had players returning. It can be a dangerous trap to fall into when, on a good run of form as Mods are, a side who seemingly poses little threat to the gathering of 3 more points up their game and perform above what their league position suggests. Last season Beeston were challenging for top spot in Senior B and only missed out on promotion through a failure to pick up more than 2 points in their final 3 games. Indeed, last seasons’ matches gave Beeston an 11-4 aggregate over the Mods which really illustrates the change in fortunes of the two sides.
The game started with Beeston deploying just 1 central striker, allowing the Mods back four time on the ball but squeezing the midfield trio into some hurried passes. Inevitably this led to chances for Mods as Nathan linked the play well and allowed Acki and Jake good possession in the wide areas. In the first 10 minutes Mods created a number of decent chances with Acki spurning the best one, from all of 2 yards, failing to open the scoring. A touch of frustration was creeping into the Mods approach to the game which was perhaps most evident in Wilko’s rollocking of Smithy for tracking back and defending well. Good work Smithy.
Eventually the Beeston resistance was broken by Jake Williams who calmly slotted past the Beeston keeper after a super through ball. 1-0.
The final 15 minutes of the half were played with Beeston predominantly on the front foot. They could have had an equaliser with the last action of the half as the Beeston forward was cynically brought down by Bergan when through on goal who took one for the team with a yellow card and £10 for the trouble. The resulting free-kick was smashed into the wall and Mods maintained their 1-0 advantage to the half time break.
What happened in the final 45 minutes was something that none of the Mods, nor the unidentified spectators who appeared from the back of a van, expected.
Beeston were well placed to push for an equaliser down the slope and with the momentum from the end of the first half. This momentum was dealt a fatal blow as Jake skilfully lobbed the ball into the top corner 10 minutes after the restart. Wilko then decided to dally on the ball as the Beeston players circled, eventually conceding possession but thankfully Matty bailed him out. No return rollocking from Smithy though.
Mods pressed on and are now starting to get into the habit of maintaining a high tempo for a full 90 minutes, avoiding the club tradition of defending their own 18 yard box when 2-0 up. More goals followed as Acki got 4, including a couple of his trademark back post headers and a tap-in, Jonny Wilson bagged from a tight angle (which incidentally he tried to better by shooting from ever tighter angles as the game progressed), Si Blake scored a superb volley after impressing from the bench, and Damo added to Wilko’s misery by scoring his 3rd of the season with a header.
Final score 9-0.
Another great win for the Mods which extends the winning run to 5 on the spin, and adds to the already high confidence running through the veins of all the players involved in the 2nds squad this season.
Thornes away next week. Hopefully it won’t rain.
