Match Report

Match Report - 09 Mar 2013, Leeds Modernians Football Club 4ths beat Leeds City OB

Old Mods turned up to their league match in good spirits despite the poor weather and the expectant poor pitch. The lads arrived at bedquilts and as expected, Mullin arrived 10 minutes later to reveal the team sheet and expectations for the afternoon. Damo started in goal with a back 4 of Kerr, Viners, Dan White and Paul. Aiden, Matty Campbell, Jim and Dougie were in midfield with the youthful exuberance of Stu and Harrison up front. Matt Flint, Dale and Jonny Hick provided a strong bench.

Leeds City Old boys were the opponents and an ageing and immobile team lay in wait for this confident mods side. The team were buoyed by the fact that all the lads were playing for cup final places so the motivation was very high.
The game stared on a pitch that was zippy and played into mods hands due to their style of play. Mods had the majority of early possession and chances as some good play lead to the final ball being either poor or to a player in an offside position. Leeds City took the lead when their lively striker shot from 20 yards and the ball took a deflection and wrong footed Damo. This was against the run of play but mods pushed for the equalizer immediately. Harrison, Stu and Aiden all had opportunities and Paul got himself in good positions from left back but there was no reward for their pressure. The leveller came after half an hour when a lovely cross by Stu was headed home by Harrison to give mods a deserved goal.

The game was level at half time.

The second half started well but mods couldn’t get the goal to put them in front. Mullin decided to put the talents of Mordue and Hick on for Jim and Campbell and this reaped immediate reward. Mods broke away and a terrific ball by Hick was brilliantly finished by Stu. The pressure continued and some great hold up play by Harrison, who then laid the ball to Hick who struck the ball towards the near post and it was too strong for the Leeds City keeper. Mods looked in control and the next goal was always going to be a red and black one…. But was it? Leeds city got back into the game when the scorer of their first goal struck a fantastic 20 yard strike beyond the reach of the fantastic damo. Matt Flint replaced Dougie to give mods fresher and more experienced legs but City seemed to get spurred on by the goal and mods worst nightmare was reality with 5 minutes to go as a run on the right lead to a cross that was lashed at by Paul who unfortunately put the ball into his own goal. Heads were down as mods were the better team but it wasn’t shown in the score line. However, straight from kick off, Harrison passed the ball to Hick who took on the city defence, glided past 3 of them before striking the ball towards goal. The ball took a lucky defection off their centre back but it looped over the keeper and gave the mods a deserved win. 4-3 was the final score but didn’t reflect the mods dominance throughout the game. Promotion is still on the cards but it will take a fantastic run till the end of the season to achieve this but the team are capable of it. Great effort Lads #UTM!
