Match Report - 09 Mar 2013, Leeds Modernians Football Club Juniors U15 beat St. Bedes AFC III
0-1 (Dave Cowie 25 mins)
0-2 (Johnny Walker 70mins)
Proper old skool game.
A mud bath of a pitch.
The 6th team this week had a good mix of old heads and young legs and the balance was just right for the type of game it turned out to be.
I felt we won the game in the first half with some resilient play in all areas of the pitch, and at times, getting in behind their defence with some good link play and passing from midfield.
After a few chances spurned, a Mods corner resulted in a half clearance effort from St Bedes and Dave Cowie on the edge of the box got his 'leg over' (sorry his knee) the ball and drilled the ball through the crowded penalty area and it managed not to land in the quagmire and nestled kindly into the back of the net.
A good goal (and I'm sure Dave won't mind, the goal was made by Rich Lancaster who held the line well on the half way line; credit where credit is due eh Dave).
The second half became a battle of attrition and wills.
We scored the vital 2nd goal from a good pass from Jimmy down the left flank for Johnny to latch onto and score past the on rushing St Bedes keeper.
St Bedes gave it their all and came close to scoring on as many occasions as we did, and they did get the goal they deserved, however no matter how many times they came close, we matched with our own efforts and ran out, I thought, deserved winners.
Many excellent battling performances all round, and the team spirit won out, however man of the match jointly awarded to Dave Cowie who was superb at cb (as was George, but Dave scored), and Johnny Walker who held the midfield together all game on a terrible pitch.
Well played lads, a fantastic win, and given the conditions, a really enjoyable game of footy. A great day out!
Special mention to the ref too (Lauren ?) who had an excellent game in difficult conditions.
