Match Report - 28 Sep 2013, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds beat Grangefield OB

Old Mods reserves arrived at Tinshill Top with a scratch side to say the least. Their opponents Grangefield had started the season in fine form with a 100% record so the result was a for-gone conclusion wasn’t it? Far from it. Mods had many regulars missing but Dave had a plan to absorb Grangefield’s attacking pressure and break on the counter attack. Mods started with Tom in goal, a back four of Widz, Bergan, Joe and Mad Dog. Karl and Damo were on the wings with Smithy and Bren in the centre of midfield. Jonny and Mr versatile Ben Bowman led the line in an unorthodox line up.
The opening exchanges were fast and furious, with Grangefield taking the game to Mods but a strong rear guard made it difficult to be broken down. After 15 minutes, some great determined play by Brendan on the left led him to pass the ball to Jonny who slid the ball into the path of Bowman who stroked the ball home from 5 yards. It was against the run of play but that was a trend that was going to continue throughout the game. Grangefield replied with some long balls into the box that were dealt with by Tom in a confident way. Mods surprised their opponents by making it 2-0 five minutes later. Smithy pressurised the Grangefield central midfielder and the ball broke to Jonny, who smashed the ball home. Grangefield were fuming but they were overplaying in dangerous areas and paid for it on that occasion. They responded by thudding a shot against the bar but yet again their slack defence were undone by the sharp Jonny who made it 3-0 just before half time. He intercepted a back pass and slid the ball to the keepers left, into the bottom corner.
The second half was played much more in the Mods half. They had to absorb plenty of pressure which was expertly dealt with by the back 9! Grangefield did get a goal on the hour mark after a long shot deceived Tom and bounced over him into the back of the net. It gave them some hope but the two goals never came and Mods held on to record a superb first victory in Senior A this season. Grangefield can feel hard done by, but football isn’t won by shots on target, corners or possession. Goals count and Mods took their chances when it mattered. A fantastic team performance and the scenes at the end of the games proved what a great result it was. Tom was a man mountain in net; the back 4 were solid and uncompromising as were the wingers. Bren and Smithy ran their socks off in midfield and the front two chased down every ball and deserved their goals. Hopefully this result will kick start the season and help Mods climb the table. UTM!
