Match Report

Match Report - 05 Oct 2013, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds lost to Old Batelians

To say we were 'outclassed' today really isn't appropriate. Batley were a shadow of last season's side who were full of goals, reverting instead to a more direct style of play and working off goal kicks as their most attacking threat. Last season's shadow cast itself further over the Mods team today though and a scrappy, poor quality game ensued. Neither team deserved 3 points for the quality of their football, but Batley managed to put the ball in the net twice from deliveries into the box that were not dealt with, and took 3 valuable points in what looks like it will be a relegation scrap for both teams based on today's evidence.

In many respects it was sad to see two teams who had battled in Senior B with such attack-minded football, quality on the ball and energy all round the pitch reduced to a game that would not have looked out of place at the bottom of Senior B never mind Senior A.

Batley took the lead when mistakes in the Mods midfield allowed the ball to be delivered into the box and a misjudgement from Bergan allowed the Batley forward to head the ball into the top corner. A good finish. 1-0. Mods were back in the game through the ever-dangerous Jonny Hick who finished well from a tight angle, 1-1.

The second half brought more second-rate football, Batley sneaking the win with a looping header over Tom that crept into the net. 2-1.

I will dare to follow the template and say that player absences cost us. But unfortunately in a game that should have been a typical blood and thunder encounter between 2 teams desperate for 3 points, a lacklustre and low quality game was the poor substitute that we were left with.
