Match Report - 26 Oct 2013, Leeds Modernians Football Club 3rds beat Amaranth Crossgates
Amaranth Crossgates ….2
Matty Campbell's late strike helped Old Mods beat Amaranth Crossgates and secure a first league win since 14th September and lift them to 9th in the YAL Division 2.
The away side took the lead early on when Tommy Stenger found himself unmarked at the back post following a corner from Aidan Gilligan, the midfielder composed himself in the box before picking his spot with a cool side foot finish.
But the hosts got themselves back on level terms when a high cross from the left wasn’t dealt with and in the following scramble the ball was somehow forced over the line from close range, Mods were complaining that Phil Gillet in goal was impeded but the referee waved away their protests and gave the goal.
Mods were struggling to deal with the pace, power and trickery of the left winger all game and he made them pay as he rode several challenges in a diagonal run from left to right before firing a well-directed low shot back across goal to give the home side the lead at the start of the second half.
The visitors did manage to get themselves back on level terms, another Gilligan corner, again found Tommy Stenger in space and he notched his second of the game with a free header into the top corner.
With ten minutes left, a speculative Matty Campbell strike from all of 0.5 yards proved enough to bag the 3 points for the Bradford / Mallinson management team. Credit must be given to Jonny Wilson who’s tireless work on the right hand side provided Campbell with the opportunity.
The game could have been wrapped up just minutes later when the same two players combined but this time the yardage proved too much for Campbell who found the side netting from a uncomprehendable 7 yards out.
The celebrations at the final whistle from Mods supremo’s Dan Bradford and Ben Mallinson, his players and the travelling support in Crossagates illustrated the importance of the victory.
It was a second successive victory against Amaranth Crossagtes, and the clubs hierarchy will hope this result in the league kick-start a push up the table.
This is the third victory in a row now for this Mods team, the two previous were in the cup against opposition they expected to beat but this result should give Mods the encouragement turn their league form around after narrow defeats in their previous two league games.
It looked like being a comfortable afternoon for the Mods when Stenger scored in the opening exchanges, and in truth it was just the Amaranth left winger who caused them any problems, it was his cross that led to the equaliser and again his powerful run and finish put the hosts in the lead.
Mods showed guts and determination to come back and grab the victory, things had gone against them in their previous league fixtures but they managed to pull themselves level again through a good set piece and Matty Campbell grabbed the headlines with a speculator late winner.
Mods now must carry this form into their next league game, next week when then play hosts to third placed Woodhouse Moor Methodists.
