Match Report - 14 Dec 2013, Leeds Modernians Football Club 3rds beat Woodkirk Valley
Dan White and Jonny Wilson each scored twice and Ben Mallinson added a fifth on his return to action Mods ran out 5-1 winners away at Woodkirk to see them extend their good run and move up to fourth place.
Dan Bradford welcomed back his fellow manager Ben Mallinson after a brief absence from the match day squad, but a recent run of good form meant that he’d have to settle for a place on the bench. James Sykes also came into the squad and took his place in goal behind an back four of Jodie Lazenby, Ashton Rowe, Dave Cowie, with Paul Green shifting out to left back.
Paul Green was involved in the opening goal as his deep cross was spilled by the Woodkirk keeper and Dan White was on hand to score one of the easiest goals he’s every likely to score. A good start from Mods was soon cancelled out as indecision at the back was capitalised on when Woodkirk breached the offside trap and forced a good save from James Sykes, only for the shot to be parried to a Woodkirk player, who had a simple task of slotting the ball home from close range.
Mods reacted well to the setback and replied instantly, Jonny Wilson breaking down the right saw his cross get caught in the wind and loop over the keeper into the net, the striker was giving the Woodkirk fullback a horrid time and it wasn’t long before he was on target again, from a tight angle his cross come shot snuck in the far corner, it was inform front man’s fourth goal in his last two games.
Mods goalscoring wasn’t quite done for the half yet, a nice passing move followed by a clever bit of interplay between Tim Hill and Dan White with the latter firing a super toe-poke into the top corner from just outside the penalty area.
As expected Woodkirk started the second half more positively but Mods kept them at bay, they did force a few set pieces which were tricky to deal with in the swirling wind, and James Sykes made some smart saves. Mods had chances of their own, Tommy Stenger couldn’t react quick enough to turn the ball home from another Jonny Wilson cross. But Mods did find the net again late on as a left sided cross fell kindly for player manager Ben Mallinson who came on up front, his low finish was the last real incident of the match that Mods won only too comfortably.
The final game before the Christmas break see’s Mods at home to Amaranth next week, they beat the Crossgates side earlier in the season, and another win next week is required to keep the promotion push going.
