Match Report - 22 Nov 2014, Leeds Modernians Football Club 1sts lost to Otley Town
Mods 2-3 Otley Town
Mods went into this League Cup match against higher league opposition on the back of an indifferent run of form, and saw this as a welcome home distraction from the league. Unfortunately a number of players were unaware that it was a cup game so decided to show up at their personally chosen meet time rather than the manager's 12:30 meet. This resulted in Otley out warming up before we'd gone to get changed.
Otley started the brighter of the 2 teams and created one or two chances in the opening 15 minutes with former fans favourite Danny Forrest going close. Mods then settled and went on to dominate the majority of the first half and looked like they may take the lead themselves, but as has been the case recently, the final ball seems to be lacking.
The contest looked likely to be goalless at half time with both sides probing for what was likely to be an all important opening goal. Mods looking relatively comfortable when showboating captain Alex Pouncett under hit a lay off to centre half Danny Claxton under little pressure and with Claxton slipping their centre forward rounded Lewis in goal before finishing nicely beyond a despairing Jim Kent on the line.
Second half Otley started much the better side and it looked like only a matter of time until they doubled their advantage - and it was. Their Number 10 went through one on one and dispatched for his, and Otley's second of the afternoon.
Mods needed a reaction, maybe a big challenge to get them going again and that's exactly what they got when Mono and their centre half both flew in for a 50-50 with the centre half coming off worse. After a couple of minutes of handbags and Mods' the ref restarted the game and you felt that this type of challenge was exactly what was needed to lift the Mods. Unfortunately from the resulting free kick the petulant Daniel Jamieson decided to exact his revenge with a cowardly soft arm into the Otley player's head - red card.
Otley went on to grab a third after a mix up between keeper and full back with the latter opening his account for the season with an own goal.
Mods rallied in the final 10 minutes pulling two back themselves, firstly with an awful header from ladies man Jimmy Lee that even the keeper was flummoxed at how bad it was, and secondly through another sublime finish from Ben Turner - but it was Saturday after all.
Overall a fair result as Mods got what they deserved for lacking discipline and showing a lack of desire during the second half.
Back to concentrating on the league with no more cup distractions. We can get out of this league this season if we all pull together as a team, get to training, turn up on time on a Saturday, fight for each other and have a beer in your club!
