Match Report - 03 Jan 2015, Leeds Modernians Football Club 1sts drew with Thornhill

Mods returned from the Christmas break hoping to put a difficult end to 2014 behind them with a tricky away trip to table toping Thornhill. With Joe Hebb struggling to make it from Timbuktu to Dewsbury, a couple of last minute drop outs from ‘Monaconda’ and ‘dizzy’ Claxton left Mods with the bare 11.

Mods looking to call upon the spirit of the Altoft Lions lined up with a standard 4-4-2 formation; ML21 in net, a back 4 of Widz, Mad Dog, Mr Mellor and Auld Jim Kent, Declan and Waz on the wings, Grey Phil and ‘Skipper’ in the middle with James Lee and Ben Turner up top.

Thornhill started the brighter of the 2 teams with Mods struggling to keep hold of the ball well enough and the Thornhill front two looking very much a threat. After a couple of half chances Thornhill eventually took a deserved lead through a well worked all be it offside goal. This seemed to drive Mods on as they started to find their feet and pick some gaps in the Thornhill defence. Some good link up play between Jimmy Lee and Ben resulted in Mods 1st chance with their keeper tipping a wonderful Turner effort onto the cross bar. Mods continued to press and push and got their reward when a short corner picked out Auld Jim Kent on the edge of the box. AJK tried to pick out his best mate Phil who done exceptionally well to duck out the way of the cross which beat everyone and found the far corner; 1-1.

The equaliser opened up the game as both sides felt there were goals in it, as did the spectators with a 9-9 score line predictor by one 6 fingered bystander. He didn’t look like he would be far wrong as Thornhill soon took a 2-1 lead after some tidy work by their centre forward found the right winger who cut in onto his left foot and smashed 1 in passed Matty at his near post. This gave Thornhill some confidence as they continued to press and began to get in behind the mods back 4 but failed to provide the killer ball or get the 3rd goal they searched for. Mods did continue to create chances of their own with the AJK short corner continuing to create problems for Thornhill after 4 or 5 attempts. Skipper Pouncey New Year’s resolution to SHOOT nearly came to fruition after a couple of failed attempts one was destined for the top corner until the keeper pulled out a worldy to tip in over the bar. Mods had the last effort of the first half when a free kick found Mellor unmarked 5 yards out but he failed to get the vital touch needed. HT 2-1

Despite trailing it was all positives at HT for the Mods and the message from the gaffer was keep doing what we are doing. Keep up the high tempo and pressing when we don’t have the ball and keep attacking in numbers when we do and the goals will come.

Unlike previous games Mods did what the manager wanted in the 2nd half and sure enough the equaliser came. Pouncey had the freedom of Thornhill and was able to carry the ball and thread a pin point pass through to Ben who doesn’t miss one on one with the keeper, 2-2. This opened the game up even further with the Thornhill midfield not interested when they didn’t have the ball and Jimmy Lee playing wherever he wanted caused a threat and picking up the ball in positions he shouldn’t have been.

Mods looked the better side and the more likely to score with Waz and Declan getting more into the game on the wings and creating chances. Declan nodded a cross back to Waz who’s stretched effort was cleared of the line and some good work from Ben found Declan unmarked 5 yards out but somehow he managed to scoop it over the bar. Thornhill made some changes and fresh legs were introduced, whilst Mods legs were looking tired on a very heavy pitch. After their tricky winger pulled the ball out the sky, went past 2 Mods players and was one on one with ML21 it looked certain to be 3-2 until Matty pulled of a great save to keep Mods in the game.

The game was end to end for the last 10minutes and either side could have taken the lead. Ben had some half chances which for him are sitters, Declan rounded the keeper but ended up by the corner flag and Jimmy Lee sent Waz for the Yorkshire Evening Post with the most over hit through ball ever. A couple of long clearances from their keeper caused havoc in the Mods area but eventually they were dealt with effectively by the Mods back 4. James Lee again listened to the Skippers shout of ‘keep it in the corner’ with a couple of minutes to go when we should have went for the win. This was then made worse by the fact the skipper then got the ball 30 seconds later and tried a 50 yard Hollywood ball which went straight to their keeper and set them on the counter.

No side was able to capitalise on the chances and the game ended 2-2. All in all a good point for Mods and one we would have taken before the game, but still feel slightly disappointed that we didn’t take all 3. Away at Kippax next week, hopefully get our first 3 points of 2015 and kick start the season now. Thanks to Thornhill for a good competitive game and a lovely scran afterwards. #UTM
