Match Report - 03 Oct 2015, Leeds Modernians Football Club 3rds beat Thornesians Res
At last the 3rds have the result and 3 points that recent performances had merited.
After a great performance last week against Churwell where we lost on penalties, the squad was once again completely changed with only 6 players from the previous squad of 14 available this week.
Mods started with Sykes in net, protected by the new centre back pairing of Shirley and Little Dan with Nathan and Sam Lunt as full backs. The midfield five consisted of Stenger, Willis, Campbell, O’Reilly and Astall with Reece up top. New boy Marcus and Andy Aston (once he had battled through traffic) on the bench.
Mods started the game well and dominated the play in the first half however the best same came from Sykes as he turned away a Thorns effort after some slack defending and good play by their forward. The first 45 minutes came and went with Mods playing some nice stuff but not really troubling the keeper.
The half time team talk was a familiar one containing the following phrases on no particular order “We’re playing well”, “We should we should be winning”, “We get the next goal then more will come” and so on and so forth. It was pointed out that these things have been said before yet we always seem to ignore them and go on to lose the game.
As the second half kicked off Thorns came out and started really well and put us under pressure for the next 5 minutes but once the Mods team weathered this they got they started to dominate again. The first goal came Reece was put through and he calmly slotted home past the keeper. Mods then grew into the game and it wasn’t too long before a second (almost identical) goal from Reece to make it two nil. Mods continued to play good football with a disciplined defence until the final whistle.
A win a clean sheet always feel good and the thirds can use this as a platform to push on in the league. The next game is a tricky home tie against Wheelwright but with the way the team have been playing recently there is a real chance of an upset at Tinshill top next week.
