Match Report - 27 Feb 2016, Leeds Modernians Football Club 2nds beat Howden Clough Res

The Reserves faced a trip to the not so wonderful Batley to take on Howden Clough reserves in a fixture which would surely bring back nightmares for manager Pouncett, the scene of his unfortunate leg break nearly a year ago.

The lads turned up to the clubhouse raring to go, only receive a Whatsapp message from Partyboy to let them know and probably tell Rob the news he wasn’t going to be available for the firsts. Alex received a nice bonus from Asda and went out and got mortal, fair enough. This meant Adie was drafted into the first at short notice (thrilled I’m sure) leaving the ressies with 12 men. It turns out after at least 3 different people calling Alex a C!#T in the group chat he managed to get himself to the game.

Anyways after a stressful journey following Matty Lewis, who proceeded to make sure he stopped at every possible stop on the way there, we finally arrived. A very experienced squad for Pouncett to choose from, with the return of former Mod legends (so i have been told) Alex Higgins and Ryan Unsworth. Line up as follows:

JP, Damo, Stenger, Maddog

Rossi, Hall, Flash, Hickey

Waz and Higgins

Sub: Unsworth

Events which proceeded may not be in order or probably didn’t happen, I really can’t remember, only thing I remember from yesterday is Coventry costing me money, I hate Coventry.

Mods kicked off and it is safe to say considering the state of the pitch, there was certainly no football expected to be played, a field fit for livestock, if even that. Mods started very poor and never really got going in the opening 10 minutes, a long looping ball over the top caught the defence off guard and allowed their striker through on goal, only for a late challenge from Damo to somehow strike the ball into the top right hand corner, leaving Matty stranded. A great finish from Damo, probably down to his new boots, surprised he wasn’t off celebrating. 1-0 Howden.

Things didn’t improve after that opener and we continued to look a bit sluggish, we allowed their winger, the most left footed player I have ever seen, through on goal with only Matty to beat but somehow managed to scoop his shot horribly over the bar, a real left off. Still 1-0.

This game was simply going to be won by which team could clear their lines the furthest and who had the pace to get in behind, thankfully for us, we had Higgins and Waz up top. A freekick in our own half from Maddog was fumbled quite hilariously by their keeper allowing Waz to slot home into an empty net, despite several calls from the home teams gremlins on the sideline claiming it was offside. It wasn’t. 1-1. A second Mods goal soon followed, a well worked throw in to Higgins who held up the ball brilliantly, to set up Maddog with the cross, which was somehow missed by Rossi, allowed Waz to take all the time in the world in the 6 yard box and pick his spot. 2-1.

Howden were clearly rattled and unable to cope with Waz and Higgins hold up play from free kicks and throw- ins. A long ball from the left hand side slipped in Waz again who was forced wide but somehow managed to squeeze the ball into the corner of the net, 3-1. Hick was causing trouble on the left and rinsed their full back, made his way into the box, got horribly chopped down and somehow the ref managed to give a corner, one of the worst pieces of refereeing you are likely to see. Mods well and truly on the front foot now. A great delivery from JP found its way to Hick who hit a first time volley, with an aid of a slight deflection, into the roof of the net to make it 4-1. There was still time for Mods to add a 5th in the first half, Hick again with the goal, one on one rounding the keeper to slow home, a very cool finish.

Half time 5-1 Mods

Second half had barely started and Waz had to come off injured with ‘a sore hammy’ if that’s a thing. Unsworth came on in his place. First 10 minutes again weren’t great with not much played being played. Hall found himself through on goal but completely bottled taking it on and passed, to the other team, standard. Mods defence holding strong and Flash trying to play football where possible Mods were comfortable. Hall won possession off their RB and after his earlier pathetic attempt at running with the ball he squared to Unsworth who took on two defenders and smashing it into the roof of the net. 6-1.

Quick thinking from Matty (yes you read that correctly) as he played in Hick on the left from a free kick who ran to the by line and squared for Unsworth to head home the 7th. It somehow managed to stay at only 7 with a hat full of chances being missed.

Mods began to tire and allowed them to add their second late on, a sloppy goal to give away. A fine few saves from Lewis kept it to only two and Mods ran out 7-2 winners, a great win and performance on an awful pitch, also nice bait after the game and lovely showers, you don’t get that often.

MoM- Higgins, Hickey or Waz
