Match Report - 16 Nov 2019, Leeds Modernians Football Club Reserves beat Huddersfield Amateurs Res
Saturday 16th November - Leeds Mods V Huddersfield Amateur
At the start of play Leeds Mods found themselves at the bottom of the table without a point on the board. They were coming up against a mid-table Huddersfield team on a heavy pitch which was one of the few games to still be on due to the recent weather.
Games as of late had all undergone a similar theme for Mods of playing well, working hard and creating chances but having moments in the game where lack of concentration kicked in and conceding quick and consecutive goals.
From the start Mods looked sharp and well disciplined, the back three of Matt Skelton, George Stafford and David Cowie where in full control and looking for the forward pass as quickly as they could. Despite going uphill first half the passes particularly from Matt Skelton where finding their target every time and it wasn’t long before Mods capitalised on their pressure. On the 7th Minute Wasim Khan perfectly timed a 50/50 tackle and won the ball for Jack Sewell to shoot from around 25 yards into the bottom corner to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The hard work from Wasim Khan continued and after a ball was played to him down the right channel, he used his pace and vision to find Jack Sewell in the centre of the box to fire into the back of the net. 2 – 0 Mods.
Mods where starting to show what they were capable of now and the midfield three where stamping their authority onto the game. Ben Morgan playing in the centre of the three with Phil Gillet to the right and Adam Gillot to the left had to deal with some aggressive and quick play from the Hudderfields team while still creating chances for the strikers. This pressing however paid off once again when on the half an hour mark a sloppy pass from Hudderfield centre back was intercepted just past the half way line by Jack Sewell, after running through to be one on one with their goalkeeper he chipped the ball over his head and into the roof of the net to complete his hattrick and make it 3-0 to the Mods.
More superb passing from particularly Matt Skelton, Phil Gillet and Wasim Khan was ensuring Mods where still creating chances and the desire to get forward from fullbacks James France on the right and Charlie Glossop on the left put pressure on the Hudderfield defence and on the 35th Minute mods won a corner which was floated in from Wasim Khan to find Jack Sewell in the box to volley into the bottom corner of the goal and complete Wasim Khans Hattrick of assists. This gave the Mods a 4-0 halftime lead.
After the break the dynamics of the game changed, and Mods had to be disciplined and make sure they didn’t give any sloppy goals away like they had in recent weeks. George Stafford was once again a rock in defence winning his headers and 50/50 battles. Matt Gibbons produced an outstanding save around the 60th minute to keep his clean sheet intact which was well-deserved after some brilliant recent performances.
Substitutes Sam Langley, Sam Norris and Danny Claxton played their part and made sure they continued to provide the energy that was required to see the game out.
A great day of the Mods who got their first win in the league and will now be looking to really get their season under way and move up the league table.
