"Cookridge Lane is our Fortress"
A strong squad of Modsmen was set to do battle against an old foe in the form of Sandal Wanderers from the Yorkshire Amateur League.
The early tempo of the game was again dictated by strong pressing from Mods forcing Sandal into making mistakes in possession in vulnerable areas. Having a stronger desire to win the ball back in all areas of the pitch and an eagerness to work hard out of possession was evident to see. Sandal were not going to enjoy the 90 minutes of football that would follow.
Mods first goal came from some solid work again in the middle of the park, with a pass through to Jack Sewell leaving a hungry Jack shoulder to shoulder with their centre half through on goal, a comfortable finish to give the Mods a 1 - 0 lead.
Sandal managed to get some time on the ball in the middle, and whilst shooting downhill found themselves in possession inside our box. Up stand the defensive duties of the team, with Kluska and Stubley refusing to yield and clearing their lines.
Great work throughout the ranks continued, with Du making some fantastic interceptions and Alex commanding his area when required.
Mods second goal came in very similar circumstances to the first, with Mods winning back possession and looking to play forwards. The key here was in not rushing forward and being patient. Sam Norris found himself with the ball at his feet with just one defender to beat, Sam sat their centre half on the floor with a great turn and slotted home a great passed finish to make it 2 - 0 to the Mods.
Mods had more chances to increase their lead, with narrow misses and squandered chances, not to mention a penalty miss; we won't dwell on that as in reality, a comfortable first half for the Mods but it could have easily been different. Sandal were not without opportunity and on another day could have made life a little more difficult for Alex in goal.
Some changes at half time, with Griggs replacing Briggs at right back, and Reiss replacing Skelton in midfield.
Sandal were not a push over, they had some good players who were rising to the task but their challenge of going up hill in the second half against a hungry pack of Modsmen was high order.
Nathan, Reis, Adam and Du were making life so difficult for Sandal, they simply could not get out of their half. Continued pressure from the front two showed, and a cross was put plate by Nathan for Kluska to head home. Rumour has it Kluska had considered turning around and going back to the half way line after the short corner was taken, a decision he now regrets almost making.
Further changes, with Nathans, Sam and Du's shift complete. Skelly, Waz and Pierre were introduced.. Imagine being a tired centre half with a fresh Was Khan coming on; good luck.
The rest of the game was very much a case of getting the job done and making sure that clean sheet was maintained. Mods, with a commanding lead and looking solid throughout changed shape slightly to make sure that Sandal were unable clear their lines and pass through the midfield.
Jack Sewell was a man on fire during this game, Sandal could not come close to him and his hard work was rewarded with another goal. Some one say this was men against boys, but in reality not many men would stand in the way of Jacko on his day, a real man of the match performance in front of admiring Mods support.
The final goal to bring the fixture to its conclusion was the pick up the bunch, and without sounding like a broken record Sandal were again simply unable to get out and Mods turned over possession in their opponents half and the ball fell the Matt Skelton who struck a fantastic effort from the edge of the box between the keepers legs. Not a question of how, more a question of wow!
In summary, a great result and evidence that the pre-season work is benefiting all of those who have participated. Solid, hard pressing, great work on the ball in tight areas, getting to the by-line when the opportunity presents itself and concentration the key to this victory.
Well done all!
