"Almost an injustice"
Leeds Modernians travelled to Normanton with clear intentions; improve on last weeks performance, and bring home 3 points. Let it be known that both were achieved in a game where a 1 - 2 defeat for the home side couldn't have been further from the truth in a game dominated by Leeds.
Against the run of play in the first half; where Leeds had several opportunities cleared off the line the team in white found themselves a goal behind at half time. Without having OptaJoe on the touch line counting corners won, possession, chances created, pass completion, tackles won, (the list could go on) it was clear as day who the better footballing team were.
Leeds worked the ball well in tight areas with Altofts unable to keep hold of the ball. Normally when it is said that a game was one sided it is normally an exaggeration but this was certainly the case for the majority of this fixture.
Altofts were limited to two opportunities throughout the fixture; one resulted in their goal where a small lapse in concentration (games are won and lost in these situations and you cannot afford to get complacent despite the fact that the game was as one sided as it was) at the back post from a cross left a free header for their forward. The second resulting in a fantastic one on one save from big Al between the sticks. A cold day for Alex with very little to do, quite literally 4 goal kicks and some effective sweeping in what was a very comfortable Saturday afternoon.
Just as comfortable were Nick and Dan at 5 and 6, their strikers causing very little concern in the air with both lads bringing the ball down when appropriate and finding feet. Lovely to see such a dominant display.
Through the middle, Leeds' 4 and 8 were sublime. With the opposition unable to get close, resorting in petty fouls and clear late tackles. How the referee let so much go for so long without any punishment will always be a mystery.
Chances continued to rain in for Leeds, with the black and blue defence somehow keeping the ball out, until finally a breakthrough from the magic man Phil Daniels with a superb strike with hisleft foot found itself in the top corner leaving the keeper no chance. The theme continued, with Altofts continuing to be naive without the ball and fouling the Leeds players in dangerous areas.
With 25 minutes left a perfectly flighted set piece found itself onto Stubley's heed, a fantastic diving header was enough to secure all 3 points for the travelling team. Some would say a leap of a salmon, but in reality it was more like a grizzly bear leaping to catch the salmon, the home team were simply not winning that header. Real grit and determination wins football games.
All in all, a comfortable game for Leeds in what could have easily been a 4 or 5 - 0 game. Altofts tried hard but never really caused much concern for Leeds. A captains performance from Kluska alongside Stubley. Josh Naylor and Duval worked the ball well in the final third and both were unlucky not to get on the score sheet. Skelton and Langley both effective in and out of possession and disciplined throughout. Callum and Phil caused the opposition problems all afternoon. Gilly and James were immense throughout. All 3 used subs played their part in seeing out the game, Francey, Kyle and Norris all gave their all to see out the victory for the team.
