Match Report - 12 Dec 2020, Leeds Modernians Football Club Reserves beat Tingley
Leeds Modernians Reserves 3 Tingley Reserves 2
James France scored a dramatic late winner to secure a well-earned and hard-fought victory for Leeds Modernians Reserves.
The game was the first competitive match for both teams since lockdown began in the UK. Early on both sides struggled to dominate the midfield and there were few clear-cut chances for the strikers. Goalkeeper Matt Gibbons was forced off his line to clear a dangerous ball over the top of the defence. Leeds Modernians Reserves settled into the game and started to create more chances with Adam Gillott having a shot outside the box which forced the Tingley goalkeeper into a smart save.
They were good chances for Leeds Modernians to score in the first half the best being when Josh Naylor headed Matt Skelton’s cross just over the crossbar. Leeds Modernians Reserves were nearly caught out when they attempted to pass the ball out from the back, it was intercepted but defender Nick Stubley put his body on the line and stopped the ball going anywhere towards goal.
Prior to the end of the first half Leeds Modernians opened the Tingley defence up, their keeper was left stranded and Adam Gillott finally put the ball into the net following a goalmouth scramble. Leeds Modernians finally have the goal they deserved.
The second half started in the worst way for Leeds Modernians, they conceded an equaliser a few minutes after half time following a mistake from substitute James Flint which left the attackers space and time to slot the ball past keeper Matt Gibbons. However, Leeds Modernians Reserves responded immediately after conceding a perfect cross into the box was headed into the net by Nick Stubley following a corner. It was the perfect response after conceding a soft goal.
Leeds Modernians lead only lasted ten minutes before another mistake meant that the Tingley Striker took a shot outside of the box which deflected wickedly off Captain Daniel Kluska and left Gibbons stranded in goal. It was a cruel blow for the Reserves as they had started to dominate the game only to concede two “soft” goals.
That goal seemed to spur Leeds Modernians Reserve side on as they had multiple attempts at goal with Tingly looking to hold on to a draw. Midfield player Du Ndlovu had a chance to give the Mods the lead with his strike outside of the box forced the keeper into a smart save. Minutes later he had another shot from a tighter angle which forced the Tingley keeper into an acrobatic save.
Nick Stubley had the chance to grab his second goal of the game following a corner routine but saw his effort just go over the crossbar. Following a second set piece minutes later Leeds Modernians thought they had scored however it was cleared off the line by the Tingley captain.
With only three minutes left of the game Leeds Modernians Reserves had won a free kick in the attacking third. It was the last chance of the game, the cross from Lucas Sefton was in a dangerous area, but the keeper was able to gather the ball but somehow dropped the ball at the feet of James France who scored an easy tap into the goal. Leeds Modernians Reserves deserved victory and clinched the win with virtually the last attack of the game.
Manager Josh Smith said after the game;
“This ended up being a really tough game against a team that were clearly looking to put right their wrongs following a drubbing in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
Tingley knew from the previous game that we were a much better footballing side, and it was clear that they adopted a more robust and physical approach against us. The conditions were far from ideal, particularly in the first half defending up the hill and against the wind and we did very well to go into half time 1 – 0 up.
The second half played out much like the first, we created some good half chances and had the majority of what I would call “proper” possession with Tingley not creating much of their own accord other than on the back of some silly mistakes. Tingley battled well and were 5 minutes away from taking home what would have been a very pleasing result for their lads, I was not prepared to accept anything other than 3 points.
We applied solid and continued pressure without the ball, we packed out the midfield and made it impossible for them to break against us. We fought harder, ran stronger, made better decisions and never stopped. A near last minute winner shows real grit and character from the squad which I still feel is getting stronger but we can still get better.
A win was a fair result, the better team won no doubt about it. This was very much a case of “that’s what you get for working your arse off kind of result”, but we have room to improve and we need to concentrate better at times with some work to do at training.“
