Beeston SA Res - vs - Leeds Modernians Res

Disappointed not to come home with all 3 points, after being 2-0 up with 20 minutes remaining the boys were so close to doing what no team had done to Beeston SA Res in the previous West Yorkshire Amateur League Presidents Challenge.

Solid foundations, commitment to the cause and basic hard graft was rewarded when we found ourselves ahead courtesy of a Joe Pancisi spot kick. The result of hard and direct running from Kyle Mangan leaving the Beeston SA defender with no option other than to commit a blatant foul, argument was that this was last man but a yellow card and a penalty awarded was probably the correct decision.

Pats on the back from the group at the break. Albeit the job was far from complete

Finding space anywhere was difficult, the Beeston SA team are very good at getting tight and forcing mistakes but our quality in possession and not just our work off the ball should be complimented. We passed the ball around comfortably and made correct decisions regularly. Beeston's only response to our positive football was to play dirty. The principle of "fight fire with fire" applies here. The champions of Alliance 2 boys matched up with the champions of Alliance 1 physically.

Mods second goal came as the result of pressure in the final third and a missed clearance from the Beeston SA keeper. The ball finding itself to the feet of James Skedgel 35 yards out, coolly slotting into an empty goal with the Beeston SA keeper caught in no mans land.

Forced changes at either full back and down our fresh legs down our right hand side, and the introduction of the leagues leading goal scorer last season for the Beeston SA side proved a turning point.

The first Beeston SA goal as the result of some consistent pressure, albeit their player was 5 yards offside (missed uncharacteristically by the official who was otherwise spot on with everything else) and the ball was clearly out of play. Their second was a good goal but as a result of a rare mistake and poor game management.

In summary, better game management needed but significant progress made. We go again.
